Clients desktop is running Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit.
Trend Antivirus installed.
All other updates will apply, only SP1 fails.
using administrator acount

Service Pack 1 failed to install on this desktop and I first ran Malwarebytes to check for a virus or trojans, scan came back clean.

I then ran the System Update Readiness Tool and it found 60 errors but all of these missing files are game files, which are never installed on these workstations.

After the tool finished I rebooted and tried to run the update and received the following error: "Windows could not search for new updates. Code 8007007E: Windows Update encountered an unknown error".

Ran the system file checker with the scannow switch and then reran the system update readiness tool and rebooted each time.

I also ran the Windows Update components tool and am still getting the Windows update encountered an unknown error message.

Any ideas ? Thanks for any assistance.
Joe

You could....

* Clean out the temporary files.
Start > Run > %temp% > ok > Organize > Select all.> Organize >Delete > You may be asked to
"Try again" or " Skip"

I suggest rebooting after each of the steps below.

* Install the latest version of the Windows Update Agent...

* Run the System Update Readiness Tool:
Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

* Try SP1 again.
If it doesn't work you might have to do a complete nuke i.e. a clean install.

JMH,

Tried as suggested and also reset the Windows Update and still get the Windows Update encountered an unknown error. Since the pc is located out of state and this is a new custom install by a third party with their retail software, I told the client to have them do a clean install of Windows 7 with SP1. Thank you for your help.
Joe.
