Windows 7 Starter Edition - Is It Really That Bad?

This is most likely what is going to give Windows 7 a bad rep. People being people will go to the store, see the cheapest they can find, and take it home. When they install it, they'll see this flaw(to them), and then want to return it. I can't see M$ giving this away as free, because of course someone is going to create a patch that will bypass this, but I can see this version costing $50-75.

3 applications is FAR less than you actually think (and is it 3 applications or 3 "Instances". For exxample if you open 2 spreadsheets as separate applications (i.e 2 "instances" of EXCEL running rather than 2 workbooks open in the same application then you'll use up your 3 applications very quickly.

Netbooks are GREAT when you need to do all sorts of "Office" type work on a train say. The screens are just about big enough and I HATE repeat HATE AGAIN ABSOLUTELY HATE BLACKBERRY'S so any email I want to use a "Proper computer" not a 21st century "Wage slave symbol tethering machine).

So email, internet, possibly paying Spider Solitaire whilst waiting for an Internet connection on your Mobile broadband USB device and at least 2 - 3 office applications.

Nope count me out of this one --3 applications is just too basic.

Also to those who say Netbooks are CR*P have they actually ever tried using one. A decent 1GB RAM with an 80 GB hard disc and an approx 7 inch screen is FINE for working "On the Road".

Nope,as I understood,I read that would be one application,as well as 3 open windows(three processes) in Firefox are counted as one app.
I believe that all "instances" as you said,would be part of just one app,and that would be Microsoft Office,or some other "office" variation.

IMHO,whoever buys netbook,buys it because he needs it as second computer for work(I dont mean office work) or something,and it doesn't need to be some high-end PC capable running Assasins Creed or Call of Duty 5 in online multiplayer mode.In fact,three apps will be way too much beacuse that "thing" will not even be "on" most of the time.
I believe that whoever buys netbook,buys it because mobile phone(iPhone,for example) is just a bit too weak and netbook has a quite enough big display,quite respectable HDD and it is ALMOST computer.If netbook would be capable for receiving phone calls,it would be almost perfect competitor in iPhone category.
So what do you expect from ALMOST computer?If netbook is suitable for somebody's needs,Windows 7 Starter edition would cover his needs too.Everyone should just try to think about Compaq Handheld PCs,and Windows CE what they were running in time of Windows 98,and XP beginnings.That was netbook of that time,quite enogh.
And if someone bought netbook just becuse it is much cheaper then laptop(and netbook performances seems quite good this days),but in fact needs laptop,and for them who are trying to use netbook as laptop,Windows 7 Starter Edition wont be enough,and it's time to start thinking about buying a laptop instead of netbook.
I believe that regular price of Starter Edition wont be more then 60-70$,and that is not too much to pay for one stable OS,scheduled to run on computers that do things for what are prepared to do,and one would be a lunatic if NOT install Win7 Starter Edition,rather then trying to make a laptop on basis of netbook,or to f***ing around with some opensource OS.We have to admit that Windows is the best solution for everyday nonspecialized use,and for "ordinary" people,the easiest way .
In that purpose,Windows 7 Starter Edition is quite enough.

You don't need a full blown atom processor which is 20x the price for small electronics which just decode mp3, or just deal with the temperature in your house, or your remote control etc etc etc...

Obviously, like with all new tech it will eventually go down in price and in size. So to say that we dont need an Atom cpu now does not mean we wont be needing them in the future, especially when cellphones and other devices now use more and more cpu power and can do many things at once.

As for the limit of 3 applications i think MS should of added this as a parental control in the other windows versions and should of just got rid of Starter all together.

The three-app limit for Starter applies only to executables, and so doesn't include system processes such as anti-virus software running in the OS's background. If you use several Web-based apps, you're also in luck, because your browser only counts as one. While, say, Internet Explorer would count as one of your three applications, opening five instances of IE wouldn't count towards your limit.

I think the 3 app limit is crap i've installed 7 Ultimate RC on my eeeoc 701SD and it runs okay and i have more than 3 apps running alot of the time, Skype, Chrome and Msn running, what if i want to run itunes? i cant! i would hate that so ill stik with my rc for the next yr b 4 it expires!
Though my only real problem is the lack of space i only have the above apps installed and the full install and oly like 40 mbs left out of my 8GB :'(

MS CEO's must have just come out of those Amsterdam Coffee shops after a session on that "funny smelling tobacco" to come up with this idea.

This what I was talking about earlier.
People need laptop,but buy netbook because of size and price difference,and then want to use it as laptop when they found that this days,netbook has not so bad perfomances at all.
