Windows 7 suddenly became unresponsive

Just a few mins ago my windows 7 would suddenly freeze up and i get the not responding error on all my applications, for like 1 min and then resumes for just a few seconds ( fast forwarding everything ) and becomes unresponsive again, i havent used the system event logs since vista, maybe anyone can give me a hand on where/how to look ?

Is it still happening? Are you still on that computer? Did you reboot since then?

edit: as for the event viewer, since it was some sort of global freezing, hard to know where it came from, could be hardware error (video card/ram/hard drive), software conflict, some sort of attack, etc,), so as for where to look at, I'd focus on the time it happened and look pretty much everywhere , starting with administrative events and windows logs I guess

that probably doesn't help much, I just wish I had more details on the problem

So far it happened twice already, once last night and once today. Im still on the PC but already rebooted the machine, actually I made a shutdown but i got stuck with windows is shutting down message so i unplugged the PC , when i booted into windows i didnt get the "Did not shut down properly" it booted straight away.

Exactly where do i look for this administrative events and windows logs, what other details do you need?

Btw is it possible to clear all the entries on the event log, i want to clear it on a regular basis so it should be easier to track this problem with a cleaner slate.

I found the administrative events and there was no relevant information during the time frame.

you did not mention the time frame during which it happened.

The logs are the "windows logs", come in 5 categories. Administrative events is just a custom view on those.

You can clear the logs, but there is probably no need to do so, as we can easily filter them and then sort/group them if needed.

For now we can probably focus on System events.

From those screens, I can say those kernel related errors could be an issue, do they happen often?


Other than that, of course I'd be curious to know more about the programs you use, including security setup.

I'd be curious to know more about the activities going on when you experience the system freeze.

And also, how long have you had windows 7 installed for?

I'll be away for a few hours, hopefully someone can take over, but if you have some free time, might be wise to run some antivirus scans, manual scanners like norman malware cleaner and bitdefender free could be a good start, as well as something like malwarebytes anti-malware and superantispyware and make sure you have a working firewall.

But first step might simply be to make sure there isn't too much stuff in the startup locations and get rid of a few very recently installed applications, if any.

How long you've been using windows 7 for will be important information, as well as whether you've experienced such problems with another os before.
