Hey guys, sorry if this isnt enough information but my PC of 3 years has recently stopped working and i have no idea about this technology...i think my storage is corrupt or something. Anyway, i followed the system start up repair options to a "system recovery options" page which allows me to "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting windows. Select an operating system to repair" however there is no OS listed in the box below. I am given the option to Load drivers but have no idea what im looking for and get the "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware" error no matter what i click. Any help is appreciated as this is my only computer and i have uni work to do :( i shall try add pictures at a later date if needed as im currently typing this from my phone. Thanks in advance :)

I'd suggest booting a Win 7 install DVD or flash drive then select Repair and Command Prompt and run chkdsk c: /r against your boot drive (may not be C: ).

See here: Download Windows 7 ISOs, Legally and for Free

Also available here: Microsoft DigitalRiver Mirror (Technet)

The 1st is a German torrent download site with verifiable MD5 checksums for each of the available ISOs.
To download Windows 7 using a torrent file, we will need a torrent client.

Any torrent client will work, though, but I recommend qBittorrent. All the others I've looked at try to install other garbage along with the torrent program so avoid them.

How to run chkdsk or System File Checker (SFC) from the Recovery Console
  • Boot your Vista or Windows 7 installation DVD
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter.
  • At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
  • At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C: ) and click Next
  • At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory.
Run chkdsk or SFC
  • If you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
  • For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above if not C: ).
  • For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)
  • Let either run to completion undisturbed.
Vista or Windows 7: If you don't have a install DVD, you can download a legal copy here:

Make sure you get the same version you have installed: 32 or 64 bit; Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.

After typing "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:windows" it says "windows resource protection could not start the repair service"

"sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:windows"
I'm guessing that was a typo, as that should be:

"sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows"

DId you run chkdsk c: /r?
