Windows 7 taking too long to shut down?

Lately I've noticed that my custom-built PC has been taking roughly 5-10 minutes to shut down, and upon start-up it takes 5-10 minutes to get past the screen for my motherboard. With my specs, I didn't think I'd have this problem. I just did a virus scan with avast free antivirus and it turned up nothing. I cleaned the disc, defragged registry, etc. but it's still taking so long to start up and shut down. And another problem is I can't even log off and log back in, if I log off, not only does that take a long time, but when I log back in the only thing visable is my cursor and my desktop never appears, it's simply a black screen (and I've left it on for hours waiting for it to load with no results). I have a Logitech gaming controller and and 3TB external HDD plugged in if that helps. My specs are:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Intel Core i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
4GB RAM
Page file: 2223MB used, 5962MB available
DirectX 11
ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series

If I missed any necessary information or you need more details, just let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unplug the 3tb external hard drive and try to boot the system and shut it down. Also, don't use ANY registry defraggers or "cleaners" as those could end in bad news for Windows 7.

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

ADD the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

After and only after completing that, then submit following:

Install CCleaner:

list of STARTUP PROGRAMS

CCleaner | Tools icon | Startup button | Windows tab |
click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
accept Startup.txt as file name | SAVE button

list of SCHEDULED TASKS

click on Save to text file button (bottom right side) |
enter Scheduled Tasks as File name | Save button

List of INSTALLED PROGRAMS

Have you tried unplugging the external hard drive to see if it helps your boot time?

I found from experience the powered external hard drives go to sleep when not in use for a spell. Actually, most of the external hard drives do. They are manufactured that way. A shutdown command and a sleeping transformer-powered external hard drive do not work well together. Ever since I switched back to a USB-powered external hard drive, there is no noticeable delay in shutdown.

I did, and I unplugged my controller too (both being USB). There was no change in the shutdown speed. But I guessed there wouldn't be, since I have my external plugged in constantly and it'd shut down and boot up just fine before.

Taking that long to get past the BIOS screen on boot indicates a possible problem with the BIOS itself. Make note of your BIOS settings (use a camera to take shots while browsing it's screens) and then reset to defaults.

Was this a gradual occurrence, where you were noticing the boot-up and shut-down time gradually getting longer, or was it a fairly sudden change? If fairly sudden, then the most straightforward thing to do is roll back whatever you did prior.

You sure have a lot of memory intensive software installed. Some game related software is loaded upon start-up too. What I'd try first is to disable all start-up programs and see if that makes a difference. Next, disable all services. If you see a definite performance improvement, then it's time to do a process of elimination to narrow down the culprit.

HOW TO USE WINDOWS DEFENDER OFFLINE ON A USB STICK
Windows Defender Offline
· is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.
· performs an offline scan of an infected PC to remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware.

Download Windows Defender Offline (about 764 kB)

You will have the choice of downloading the 32bit version (x86) or the 64 bit version (x64).
The link will help you determine whether you are running a 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Windows

NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 32 bit version using a 64 bit version of Windows

You run the 32 bit version on a 32 bit version of Windows.
You run the 64 bit version on a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 32 bit download file name is: mssstool32.exe
The 64 bit download file name is: mssstool64.exe

For the curious, this program was originally name Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.


INSTALLATION:
You will need an Internet Connection.
Insert 512 mB (Microsoft’s 256 mB is no longer accurate) or larger USB stick into a usb port.
Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe

Choose the option On a USB flash drive that is not password protected
NEXT button

The install program will format the usb stick using the NTFS format.
The install program will download about 210 mB.
The install program will name the USB stick WDO_Media32 or WDO_Media64
The WDO_Media32 usb stick will have used space of 255 mB (268,140,544 bytes)
The WDO_Media64 usb stick will have used space of 282 mB (296,165,376 bytes)
You can expect the number of mB to increase as more malware appears.

UPDATE Windows Defender Offline USB stick:
· reinsert the usb stick
· run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.
· the update will download about 66 mB (mssstool32.exe) and 68 mB (mssstool64.exe).

Since the malware database is sometimes updated several times in a day, always update before running.

PERFORM AN OFFLINE SCAN
Bootup your computer from the USB stick
Windows Defender Offline will automatically perform a quick scan.
After the quick scan finishes, Choose Full Scan
Select all of your drives

The initial, full scan can easily take several hours, but
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.


RESULTS OF THE SCAN
The results will be in 4 log files on your computer's disk in:
\Windows\Microsoft Antimalware\Support
msssWrapper.log, (reveals start and stop time of WDO)
MPDetection-dddddddd-nnnnnn.log, (version of detection engine and AV database)
MPLog-dddddddd-nnnnnn.log (scan summary), and
MpCacheStats.log.

Upload the four log files please.
