I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Intel Core i3, 2.93GHz with 6 GB of RAM on a Gateway SX2840. Task Manager is not working on my PC. As soon as I open it, it says that there is a problem and it has to close. I have scanned the computer and it does not appear to be a virus- everything else works fine. I searched the web and have tried every "solution" that I have found online to no avail :banghead:. I have included two screenshots in the hope that it might lend some clues. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I established a clean boot and went through most/all of the troubleshooting steps you mentioned and the problem is still present. I would like to narrow the issue down further before I attempt a Repair Install or a Clean Install. I have attached a copy of Event Viewer Error logs in the hope that it can help.

Hi Phil -

It explains how to deal with repeat errors in the troubleshooting steps. Google the exact text with any identifying numbers to see how others have resolved them. You can do this work yourself.

Looking at your logs however it appears you have significant corruption of the OS which may or may not be resolved by a Repair Install. There may be damage from an infection, from compound tweaking which Win7 will not tolerate, or from dodgy software. We don't know how you use your OS.

But what we do know is that if you'll follow the Best Practices for getting and maintaining a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 then you should get beyond these problems and stay there.

This is a transformational experience for both the PC and the User which actually gives you a better install than a brand new computer considering how they come larded with corrupting crapware. Then if you save a Win7 backup image of your finished setup you'll never have to reinstall again .

You could try a System Restore before any installing but from your error logs it appears your registry is corrupt, fouled up and a restore won't fix that.:(

Greg/Britton-

Thanks for all of your insight and help. I am really not that computer savvy, but I will dive deeper into the issue at hand and see if I can't try to figure out what's going on with my PC- I really didn't think it was that bad as it is operating fine for the most part. Its just the Task Manager that seems to be not working. The logs were mostly Greek to me, but i will take your suggestion and Google the details and see if I can't get some better idea as to what is going on. I am running AVG free edition and I thought it was doing a good job- perhaps I should switch over to the Microsoft Security Essentials. Thanks again for all your help.

Good idea to replace the AVG crapware with MSE.

I wouldn't be afraid of a Repair Install since it often solves problems just like this one. Save a Win7 backup image so you have a path back. I only can remember one failing though. They normally roll themselves back if they falter.

I agree with this too, AVG and w7 won't play well together, McAfee is another one to avoid.
