Hi all,

Just recently after years of use my system fails to boot into the OS and claims there's some-thing "missing".
When I use the repair disk I'm told it can't be repaired and I have to use the image I made- which I do and it works again.
What I find strange is that my repair disk process finds my OS on my "D" drive when in fact my OS is installed on my "C" drive. There is no OS on my "D" drive.

I have a "C" drive RAID 0 and a "D" drive RAID 0. Control-I was used.

I can reveal what's on my "Event Viewer" if anybody has some idea about what might be occurring.
Theres lot's of warnings and errors listed.

Avast loads up when my PC starts as well.
I did sfc /scannow and it didn't show any problems.

I hope someone might be able to advise me.

Does BCDEDIT.exe come in here?

regards
:-)

Hi Snick,

I changed the boot-up in the BIOS from "C" which didn't load - to the repair disk in the LG DVD Player I have.
A Windows loads and I get asked do I want to repair the OS. The repair disk sequence has identified/located my Win 7 Ult OS on my "D" drive for some reason. It's not there. It's only ever been on the "C" drive.
The attempted repair starts when I click yes but of course on the "D" drive there is no OS to repair.
Eventually the "repair" fails and I use the system image I have.
The repair disk is in the DVD player and it's identified as Disk "F". I've got three dvd players on my PC.

The repair disk sequence has identified/located my Win 7 Ult OS on my "D" drive for some reason.

Winpe ( the booted recovery environment) allocates drive letters differently. It is normal.

Hi SIW2,
Thanks for the reply. :-)
My repair disk does at least find my OS even though on another drive. Even then a "repair" is not accomplished. Good job I have a current "image" of my "C" drive.

As a result of this experience I've once again engaged with using Command Prompt, bootrec/fixmbr/bcdedit.exe,diskpart, attrib bcd -s -h -r,and rebuildbcd. Stuff I'd forgotten for some time.

Theres plenty of tutorials on this forum and Youtube. All in all I think I'll be able to cope.

So instead of using the "image" I'll repair the MBR/Bootrec etc.
One can export a working Boot Record using bcd.
Does anyone know of the command in command prompt to replace a failed boot record with a good saved one? That would save you having to go through the rebuilding process.
regards
all.:-)

Does anyone know of the command in command prompt to replace a failed boot record with a good saved one?

Do you mean a backed up bcd store?

bcdedit /import <full path to bcd backup>

You can borrow my boot media so you can see what you are doing

Hello SIW2,
Once again thanks for the reply.
Yes I do.
bcdedit /import <full path to bcd backup>
So I can do a bcd /export to a usb flash drive as the backup presumably.
So if my bootup goes astray again I can use this bcd backup to repair it.
Within command prompt of course.

Since embarking upon this investigative journey I've rediscovered
EaseUS Partition Master/Hirens Boot CD and HD Hacker.
I've burnt a WinPE boot up disk for EaseUS and repairing the MBR/Boot record
is one of the options on it - all within command prompt. Same goes for Hirens/HD Hacker.
As long as you have a rescue disk for your Win 7 ULT x64 you can still repair your MBR etc
as long as you know the right DOS commands. You don't actually need the third party programs.
This is what I have learnt.
Clearly a good knowledge of DOS commands is important.
Can you suggest anywhere where these important commands are explained "simply"
I know all about /? help.
Thank you for your boot media. I'll study it.
Best wishes.
