Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and Windows XP with SP3 file sharing

Hello all,

I am quite sure this has been asked already in some form or another but I could not locate it as I will put it now so please indulge me a bit and help me if you can.

I have two laptops, that are at the same DOMAIN (not workgroup) at work. One runs Windows 7 ultimata 32 bit and the other Windows XP professional 32 bit (with SP3). There, a domain controller takes care of all authentication issues and I have no problems sharing files from the one to the other and vice-versa.
Question is, what happens at home/other place where there is no domain controller available? I have a wireless modem/router and I can, indeed, "see" one computer from the other (in the network folder of course). But I cannot access the one from the other and I get an error message when I try to, with the usual "so-and-so is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command." (when trying to access the XP PC from the Windows 7 one)
I take the last line to mean that there is no domain controller (which is correct). Please do not tell me that the only solution is to remove them from the domain and put them in a homegroup.

Hi Hasim! I will try to help, but I am a network professional and not as much experienced with server issues, though not completely clueless.

With Domain issues, there is usuallly some caching involved. This is why, for example, you can log in to the domain, even when you are not truely on the domain.

OK, so you can share files while actually logged into the Domain. One workaround I would look into is if you can VPN both machines into your corporate network.

Please try to be patient. Domain issues can be VERY complicated as they involve networking AND server issues.

Have you talked to your SERVER people at your company? They can tell you if this is even possible for their network.

hello Ray - thanks for trying to help first of all. No VPN available I fear, so the workaround won't work (it is a nice idea though - will keep that in mind).
I fear I may have to leave the domain, set a home workgroup and work from there and rejoin the domain when I am at tha company

Can you log into the computers through a local log-on when you are at home, instead of using the domain log-on?

Domain caching will most likely keep you from being able to login locally, unless you know the local administrator login credentials. Any decent enterprise IT department would surely block this ability from their employees. But, it's worth trying....

Will probably have to take the XP computer off the domain most likely. Will try it and let you know what happens.

I would contact your IT department about doing the above. Ask them to set you up with a local log on, or make them tell you how to access files from one machine to the other without using a jump drive.
