Every few minutes to a hour my audio does this stuttering sound and either the ingame video I am running will stuttering or a slight screen freeze if I am not playing anything. It will only happen for a few seconds then go back to normal. I am not sure why this has started happening as the rig I have is custom built. At first I thought it was iTunes as it happens more often with it running but it occurs even with iTunes off.

If you need additional information I will reply as soon as I can. Thanks in advance.

CrashPlan service caused stutter for me

After following the advice in this thread and several others without success I had to troubleshoot the hard way... good old trial and error.

I killed all running background processes and non-essential services and found the stutter stopped completely. So it had to be a running background process. After a little experimentation I found the CrashPlan background process seemed to be causing the stutter despite no obvious high CPU loading or competition for resources.

After a bit more research into CrashPlan and these video/audio stutter symptoms I found a blog post suggesting to switch off a CrashPlan advanced backup option:
  • Back up open files.
This helped, but in my case I also had to disable:
  • Watch filesystem in realtime.
Turning these options off does reduce the instant backup safety net that CrashPlan provides, but for me this is an acceptable tradeoff. My scheduled backups still run every day.
