Windows 7 Update caused problem

Hi to all,

Windows 7 recently installed 4 new updates ... KB2419640, KB2454826, KB976902, KB890830 ... and after the update, I could open no folders. The system reported 'no program associated with this file ...', and I could find no work-around solution. I rolled back to a restore point just before the update, and all worked. I performed the update again, and the same problem. I restored again to a prior restore point.

Some additional info ... recently, I had to repair my laptop, and removed the HD and installed in another for a while. The first automatic update was performed in the other laptop, and it was just after this, I returned the HD to this laptop.

During the problem, I could open files from within an application (ie. in Excel, I could find the file, and open it, but from "my computer" directly, I could access no HD.

During the problem, I could open files and folders from my desktop, but in any opened folder, I could not open anything directly.

I'm hoping for some solutions, and until, I have to avoide updates.

Thanks,

______________Dennis

Set automatic update to notify. When the updates arrive again, install one at a time. If they all install great. If one is the problem install the others. When the problem arrives again, right click and then hide, unless the update is classified important.

Hello Dennis, and welcome to Seven Forums.

We've seen this quite a bit after these updates. Try downloaing and merging the Directory and Folder options in the tutorial below. It will restore the default associations for them and hopefully allow you to be able to open folders again after the restart with the updates still installed.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks for your responses ...
From reading the other posts it seems teh KB2454826 is the culprit, and it is said to be an important update.

Regarding the "merge" software, it seems others have tried this as well with no success.

I'll keep the updates off until hopefully there is a better solution.

Thanks ...

It has worked for the ones that I suggested it to so far that had only the folder issue. You might give it a try to see. If it doesn't help, you can always just do a system restore or uninstall the update like before.

Thanks, I will give it a try. Reading through all the posts was helpful, but it's hard to take it all in.

Thanks for your help
