PLease run another CheckSUR and post the log - I want to check that it agrees with SFC that things are fixed.

Good - the other error is also solved.

I may be being optimistic here- but try Windows Update now.

No good news. The updates still will not install. On a lark, I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and it says it corrected several errors (Security settings, Service registration, and Problems installing recent updates). It also reported it could not fix Windows error 0x80070057.

Let's try a full repair of Windows Update...
Download the Windows All-in-one repair tool from Windows Repair (All In One)
Run it - but ONLY the Windows Update repair section - and see if that fixes things.

Stand by, we have a development. Before I saw your post, I ran the Windows Repair Tool from Tweaking.com (with clean boot), tried an update, one of the oldest updates that has not installed for more than 30 days, installed. Trying more. Oh, now I see your link is Tweaking.com.

OK, good news, I was able to install all of the problem updates. The only "important" update I have not retried is the
installation of IE11. I am a little gun shy of that one, as it has crashed the system twice. When that happened I could only recover by booting from a rescue disk to the repair mode, and restoring the system from a system image on an external drive. It may install properly now since the update problem seems to be resolved. One other small issue, as mentioned in my post #19, an optional update, KB2670838, Platform for Windows 7 x64, appeared to install, but on restart gave the following error: WindowsCodecs.dll either not designated to run or it contains an error. That remains the same. Not sure if that is anything to worry about. Tonight has been major progress.

Good news, at least!
Have a go at the IE11 update - it shouldn't crash so badly this time (if it crashes at all). Obviously, make backups first!

I tried the IE11 update again with the same results, system crashed on reboot. It will not boot up, I can go to repair mode (F8), but no repairs work, no restore points work, and the system image restore does not work. I have to use a rescue disk to boot to repair mode, then I can use a system image to restore. I have never been able to get IE10 to install either. Unless you have another suggestion, I am happy that we got the other 19 updates installed. I owe you a pint or two for your help.

Let's have a look at your event logs, and I'll see if anything smacks me in the face.

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

You have a fairly large number of errors -
ScRegSetValueExW call failed - possibly from an errant AV, or from malware
WD Backup service failed to start
Windows Search service terminated unexpectedly
The FontCache service terminated with the following error: FontCache is not a valid Win32 application. (!!)
A couple of CA Certificates are out of date (and seem to have been so for more than 3 years)
Lots of Search errors with inaccessible sources. - and some with corrupt indexes.

You also have some errors in the SPP area - which may give us another handle on the problems.

we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- in your own thread, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

That's normal.

Computers that come pre-installed with Windows from large manufacturers usually come with two Product Keys.

OEM SLP: This is the key that came in Windows (from the factory). It works by connecting to a BIOS flag (the SLIC table) found only on computers from that Manufacturer. It also checks for the existence of proper matching licenses in the OS itself. Once it sees both, it self-activates every time the machine is rebooted.

COA SLP: This is the key seen on the sticker located on the side, bottom or in the battery compartment of your machine. This key is for use if the OEM SLP self-activation stops working for whatever reason.

There's no errors in your report, which is a little surprising, considering the Event log errors I saw.

I think your worst problem is with the Search service - whether this is cause or effect is another matter.

Possibly the best way to approach it is to reset it to defaults and see what happens.

Done with the index rebuild, but I am missing something re: the settings screen shot you need. I see a link "To read the entire tutorial" in post #10 on page 2, but when I click on this link it just takes
