Trying to repair a Windows 7 64bit Dell Laptop. Owner had bad RAM running back from February causing multiple BSOD and unstable behavior - but they kept using it. Got new RAM, it now tests rock solid with both ms ram tests and memtest. No more BSOD.
Now trying to repair corrupted files. Tried to install SP1 through Windows updates, got errors. Tried Standalone download. Fails with "An illegal character was encountered."
Tried several MS "fixits" to repair SP1 install failures - now windows updates fail entirely with 0x80070246. Tried sfc/scannow. Fails to complete.
Tried SURT. Completes successfully, but does not fix underlying problem.
Tried as a next-to-last resort a repair install. Fails after copying files, tells me to restart windows and retry setup, with "download all updates" checked. Have tried both with and without updates. No luck.
Google got me as far as reading the CHECKSUR and CBS logs, which show a handful of missing manifests and mum/cat files. Couldn't find another windows-7-lacking-sp1 pc to copy the missing files from (I assume SP1 changes the manifest file sets? Couldn't find the files on any of the win7 sp1 systems, anyway)
Google then led me to this forum, showing posts where others with similar missing files were able to post logs and get back a zip file of the missing manifests & etc. I am hoping that someone will be as kind to me. Attached are the cbs.log, checksur.log, checksur.persist.log, and the setupact.log from the failed repair install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have some registry corruption which needs to be fixed before we can get a true picture of the situation with the files.

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or SkyDrive) and post a link.

Yes, I was afraid of that - reviewing my logs after I posted, I noticed the misspelled "resourbes" in the second file name.
Here's the link (hope I've done that correctly - first time actually using skydrive) http://sdrv.ms/18VfsF2

I've uploaded a file - iglaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY %userprofile%\desktop\iglaa\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

(I have a slow connection, so it may take a while for the file to appear in my SkyDrive - try again every 15 mins!)

Good - now we'll go for the file errors...

I've uploaded a file - iglab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder iglab in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Also, please reboot, then upload the new COMPONENTS file to your Skydrive Public folder

OK - there was only a Packages folder, no Manifests folder - but your instructions only referenced copying the packages, so no worries. Looks like all but the missing manifest are fixed. Here's the logs and the link:

The manifest file is actually named wrong - which is why I need the new COMPONENTS file :)
The packages files are OK now, as you noticed.
With luck, I should be able to get the Components file fully corrected this time around, and that'll leave only one or two errors for you to deal with manually.

I've fixed as much as I can for the moment - I've asked for assistance with the remaining errors.

I've uploaded the new COMPONENTS hive in the file iglac.zip - please use the same procedure as previously to replace the existing one, then run CheckSUR again post the results, reboot, and upload the new COMPONENTS hive again.
That way my advisor has a nice clean one to work on - or I have a simple one to puzzle out on my own :)

OK, here's the logs and link again (I'm just replacing the old components.zip in the skydrive each time - I assume that's OK?) Down to 7 errors! Thanks so much for your help. And that of your advisor(s).

There's one more error I can deal with there - I missed a third bitflip in a subkey.

I've uploaded the new COMPONENTS hive in the file iglad.zip - please use the same procedure as previously to replace the existing one, then run CheckSUR again post the results, reboot, and upload the new COMPONENTS hive again.

(It's taking longer to upload than earlier ones - try again every 15 minutes or so!)

Sorry- are we still in "Noel's Sky Drive"? I don't see iglad.zip (or any of the others) in the "oneoffs" folder anymore.

RATS! - I was sure I had it right that time! :(
It's 1a.m. here now and I've been up since 4 a.m - so it's going to have to wait until the morning.

Happy New Year, by the way! :)

See you in the morning!
