Windows 7 Updates keep failing including SP1

Well I tried the flush.bat and it didn't seem to help at all. But thanks for the suggestion nonetheless.

I also then tried downloading the SP1 standalone installation file directly from MS site (a 900MB download), and after running that after it finally finished the installer gives the error:

Code:
"Installation was not successful"

"A system error prevented the service pack from installing. Please download and run the 'Check for System Update Readiness' tool"

But I have already "successfully" downloaded the update KB947821 which IS the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. Having this doesn't seem to make a difference. SP1 just hates me right now.

I also tried running this again after several restarts, and it even gives the same error when trying to run it in Safe Mode.

Not to mention that after a restart somehow ALL of my Update History got cleared. How the did this happen?? Like things can't get any worse now. Is it trying to shove it in my face that I can't get SP1? And now I can't even look back to see all the updates that I've installed before all this trouble started happening.

Anything else I can possibly try or should I just throw my system out the window?

The Update History is nice, but terribly UNimportant :)

One thing does come to mind - what AV are you using?
Some (like Norton and McAfee) have a nasty habit of slamming the door on SP updates - iven if they were uninstalled months prior - unless their removal tool has also been run.

Don't worry I hate bloated AV so I've never used them. The only security tools I have are MSE and some anti-spyware scanners like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

For everything else I use common sense and upload suspicious files to online AV scanners like Jotti.org

Good for you - sounds like me on a good day (when I remember to upload to virustotal!) :)

I don't recall seeing a CBS log or a CheckSUR log - is that because they both reported no problems? if not, then please zip both, and attach them

Hmm I don't remember any instructions on how to do these exactly. Do I need to download any more programs to generate the log files or can I find them somewhere in the system folder?

Both are in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.
you'll have to create a copy of the CBS/log file, as it's permanently in use - simply right-click on it and select Copy - then paste it on your desktop. Do the same for the CheckSUR.log file. Then highlight both new files, right-click on one of them, and select 'Send to..' 'Compressed (zipped) folder'
Attach the zipfile to your reply.

It looks as if the CheckSUR install never completed.

Please try it again, with a fresh download.

The SFC log has recycled everything prior to today - you can either run another SFC /SCANNOW, or attach the CBSPersist__20120314xxxxxx.cab file from the logs folder.
The file was probably recycled because your machine has installed this month's updates - which proves that there is nothing wrong with the WU system as such, merely with these updates.

If you want to check what was installed, look in the list of Installed Updates, and sort by date.

Oldest? - normally, you only get one about every 5 days or so.
Mine are dated 14th Mar, 15th Feb, 12th Jan, 4th Jan, and 15th Dec!
It may be that all the messing with the WU system is triggering more frequent flushes.

you'd probably best run another SFC /SCANNOW and post the new CBS.log file when it's complete

Odd - the CBS.log file appears to be incomplete - it stops at POQ83.

Odd - the CBS.log file appears to be incomplete - it stops at POQ83.

Well the sfc /scannow command didn't actually get to complete all the way.

I ran it several times and each time it would get about half way through and then give the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I guess I'll just wait till it fully completes 100% and then re-post the CBS.log file.

It's kinda important to tell us things like that, without waiting for us to ask :)
That could well mean that you have disk problems.
Please run a chkdsk scan.
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

Once complete, have a look in the Event Viewer for the results - it’s in the Applications log, as a Wininit entry, copy and paste the results to your response

Well the sfc /scannow command finally completed 100%.

I must of done it over 30 times before it finally completed all the way. When it did though it said there were some files it found that were corrupt. I was going to paste the exact command prompt results into this reply, but before I could I got a Blue Screen

Hopefully the BSOD didn't affect the finally finished CBS.log file however, so I'll attach the new one to this reply.

Also you are probably right about my system having disk problems. It usually goes into disk check automatically every time I restart, and I've done it a bunch but I've also skipped it multiples times too (just because doing it again after EVERY restart doesn't seem to be that productive).

So since I've already done chkdsk before, looking in the Event Viewer I see several Wininit entries. So I'll just paste the results from the most recent one I did, which was a little over 12 hours ago.

Well I know it's been a while but SP1 still isn't installing for some reason. I know there has to be something I'm doing wrong.

I just downloaded the 1.9GB ISO file to see if maybe that would do it, and it looked good when it said installing, but then not even a half hour later the SP1 installer encountered an error and said I need to download the System Update Readiness tool which I KNOW I don't have to because I've already tried countless times.

Not to mention it says that the Hotfix that the SUR tool is supposed to install is already installed in my Update History. So now I'm stumped as to what to do.

Is there anything else I can possibly try?

I've upgraded my RAM and a added a new 1TB HDD to my system since my last post so hopefully these will allow my system to be more stable.

Any ideas at all?

Thanks for all and any help, it is as always still much appreciated.

First a couple of points about the CheckSUR tool.
1) It is a tool, not a patch, and as such (despite the entries in the Installed Updates list) it doesn't get installed as such - it runs and exits
2) you can run the tool as many times as you like - and sometimes that can be of benefit.

I see that no-one came back to you on your previous resonse - sorry about that.

When you say that you have a new HD - do you mean that this HD is slaved to the riginal, or that you transferred the OS to it by some means - if so, how?

[I just had a quick look at teh CBS.log from your previous post, and there were still problems present in that log, but it stopped abruptly before completion of the last SFC scan - you should run anther SFC scan and post a new log]

When you say that you have a new HD - do you mean that this HD is slaved to the riginal, or that you transferred the OS to it by some means - if so, how?

Well it is not slaved to the original because it is a SATA connection rather than IDE, and SATA uses individual ports for each connection rather than a Master/Slave configuration. But yes it is just added as another drive, my OS still remains on my C: drive so I didn't have to do any transferring of System files or anything like that.

And thanks for the ISO site Burdas, I bookmarked it so I'm sure it will come in handy sometime.

Here is the new CBS.log file that was generated after I did SFC and Chkdsk and what not.
