windows 7 will not boot goes to black screen

Hello,
windows 7 on my laptop (toshiba sat.) will not boot it goes to the [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]toshiba[/COLOR][/COLOR] screen then black with cursor in top left. i cannot go to safe mode or startup repair because when you hold F8 or any other key it just beeps. im trying to keep from trying the factory reset. please help! thanks

Is the HD detected in BIOS setup? Set disk drive first to boot. If disks needed for repairs fail to boot, reset BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS
