Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7.

In the coming days, we’ll be deploying a new update for Windows Activation Technologies, the set of built-in activation and validation components built into Windows 7. Called Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7, this update will detect more than 70 known and potentially dangerous activation exploits. Activation exploits are sometimes called “hacks”, and attempt to bypass or compromise Windows’ activation technologies. This new update is further evidence of Microsoft’s commitment to keeping customers and partners secure. The update will determine whether Windows 7 installed on a PC is genuine and will better protect customers’ PCs by making sure that the integrity of key licensing components remains intact.

Thanks JMH for this; does anyone know the exact KB number for this update. It looks a little bit worrying that it scans your machine every 90 days etc. Any opinions on the matter; what would others suggest? Thanks.

For those of us running a legit copy of Windows, then that is not the point at all! It is about having yet another process running to take away CPU and RAM resources for no good reason whatsoever.

And then it is also about the "false alarms" meaning you have to call MS to get the darn thing working again... perhaps once every 90 days?

In an age when a PC is as essential for many people as a beating heart is for all, you do NOT want to have to go into hospital for your 90 day heart transplant, do you? Ok, so an over-statement, but you can see where I am going with this, can't you?

this is why the mobo manufactures have been looking for a new way to lock down the bios from windows. at one time the bios sent info to the os telling it what was and was not installed, and what the bios settings were. since xp microsoft has rewritten how windows gets the bios info. pre xp the os could not poll the bios for info, post xp it could. the idea of having the bios unaccessible from within windows to protect it if something should go wrong with windows. now with the bios so closely tied to windows you run the chance of taking the bios down as well if something major goes wrong with your windows install. mobo manufactures need to complete their work in relocking windows out of the bios. even if it would force microsoft to rethink their anti-piracy schemes.

Thank god I have updates turned off. Let me know how bad it messes things up in the next month or so with everyone's pc's. Remember its to better protect us from security breaches.

That's why us no brained corporate fools that are lead to the watering holes by exec's use ..say it with me Microsoft...."A N T I V I R U S". It detects potentially unwanted applications and programs from installing potentially unwanted software such as you state on our machines. How is it that these people say it

P.S. I AM NOT GOING TO LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE IN ORDER TO FIX "MY" MACHINE. Nothing intended towards anyone, but I am sick and tired of when I phone someone for any type of tech support they can barely speak my language.

This isn't even going to stop anyone with a legitimate copy! the day this update is released there will be another crack that will bypass this, windows has been around for ten years, and every single product they have has been cracked successfully.

I've nothing against Legitimate activation and decent Piracy prevention -- but I'm a bit concerned about applications "Phoning Home" every so often - especially if you are not connected to the Internet and are doing an important gig where you NEED your computer.

I once had a nasty problem with Photoshop Activation working in this way --in the middle of having to get photos ready for the following day I got a message similar to "Cannot check License credentials" - Photoshop will exit until activated.

As I didn't have Internet access I was stuck -- for a Program I had PAID for and had a valid license. I managed to connect eventually via an old fashioned dial up modem --but what a mess.

I just hope that Windows doesn't go down the same path.

I don't phone anyone for tech support on my computer cause I can fix it myself.

But I totally agree with you. Every time I call for tech support for my cell I get some guy or girl over in india with a heavy indian accent....

the crack for it is out already, they managed to crack it before it is even released

Absolutely agree; that kind of behavior is just disgusting on the part of the software vendors - for a product that you have paid for!! Hope I'm not digressing but I often feel the same way about software that you have to download for a paid product: I am thinking of purchasing an Iomega external drive; excellent reviews apart from the fact that you have to download and register each individual backup application (there are several)! (My) time wasted!

it is not about having a legal copy. it is about something phoning home every x amount of days. in a nutshell we are going to be guilty til proven innocent.

i do not allow anything to phone home on it's own. i have all programs either set to ask permission when i run them, or i go into their settings and click to manually check for updates.
