Until a recent Windows update on February 13, 2014 my Windows 7 was fine then after the update my Windows 7 had this Build 7601 not genuine message on the lower right hand corner and it will not accept my product license key. The background screen is black and the message does not go away. I have had the upgrade product for a couple of years and purchased it a Best Buy, legitimately.
I have seen many reportedly "fixes" for this on the internet but they appear to be just that, fixes for those who want to keep the trial version rather than purchase the product. How do I fix this correctly? I am not a computer geek, so I need some "English" verbiage please...no geek talk. Thank you.

Hi, Welcome to Seven forums.

Activate Windows 7 manually:
1. Click Start, and in the Search box type : slui.exe

2. Press ENTER on your Keyboard

3. Select your Country.
4. Select the Phone Activation option, and hold on for a real person.

Get Windows activated.

What didn't work? Did you get to the phone activation part or not?

Try: slui 4.exe

Whenever I add the license product key it does not accept it as valid. This was a valid retail purchase a couple of years ago and just came up after a windows update as Not genuine. I need to fix this and return to normal.

OK. The only way that you're going to get this fixed is to call Microsoft and have your copy of Windows reactivated by a Microsoft representative,

The easiest way to do that is to follow the advice of Archer and Ztruker. Archer's instructions are spot on. What part of them did not work?

Do you have any reason to think that your copy isn't legit because it is probably a bios conflict. Did you lose power or reset your Cmos? Try jumping the Cmos reset the bios. Make sure that the clock in the bios/UEFI is the right date, time, and year. Otherwise the computer will go Y2K on you haha. It's a weird issue but easy to fix.

Yes, it's possible that a power lose happened during this time frame. I don't know what the Cmos is, but if you are talking about the clock and time in the lower right corner, yes it is correct. See, this is what I don't get about this whole thing... I have had this Windows 7 upgrade on this laptop for at least 2 plus years... no problems, everything working just fine, (of course I stupidly had the auto updates ON) then on 2/13/14 a bunch of MS updates start downloading and then it pops up. Bingo here it is and I haven't figured out whether it's a virus (which my anti virus program did not detect) that has corrupted things or if its something else. For us un-geeks it's very frustrating!

No I was talking about the clock in your BIOS/UEFI. There is a chip on your motherboard that has a "Basic Input Output System" that controls stuff on your motherboard. You need to enter it when the computer is booting up. Google how to enter Bios. On mine you hold delete or F2. Every system is different. In the Bios you need to check if the clock in there is the right date, time, and year.
