I apologize for the long post but I'm trying to provide as much information as possible.
Up until last month my Win7 PC has operated almost flawlessly. The comp is about 2 years old - i500 series, 4GB of RAM, 1 TB harddrive. The comp is primarily used for gaming, code writing, and photoshop/animations. For whatever reason, it is now dreadfully slow when booting up. Once the computer boots up (a good 20 minutes later - no exaggeration), it will work fine for an hour or so and then the game being played will hang for about a minute or two, resume working properly and then hang again an hour or so later. The issue appears to be tied to the internet connection somehow. Other programs running in the background seem to be working. At this point in time, there is no discretion between which program hangs and which ones dont. Whatever program is active is the one that hangs. This pattern seems to repeat itself every hour or so.
To me this sounds like a malware or virus issue. However what do more experienced people think?
The first time the game hung, I simply rebooted the computer. It hadnt been rebooted in a while and I figured it just needed a rebooting. That reboot took forever and has not recovered since then. At that time, Windows rejected my onboard ethernet port (which had been working prior to reboot) and would not install the drivers for it. I even went so far as to completely remove the device and let Windows work through it - all to no avail.
I have reset winsock via the MS-prompt menu (that I ran as an admin). This does nothing.
My virus program is eNod32. It found nothing.
When the comp is hanging, the taskmanager shows that no resources are being used - yet it is completely unresponsive in regards to the program that is hanging.
ICQ was the last program installed prior to this issue.
When booting up in safe mode, the machine is quick like it used to be. However, I didnt stay on safe mode long enough to determine if the machine would hang at some point in the future. All I know is that it booted up in a matter of a couple seconds which I took as a good sign.
I have had issues with the onboard ethernet port in the past. One of my posts on this forum goes into detail regarding that port. In the end, I disabled the port in my CMOS and then installed new ethernet hardware. This did not fix the issue.
Other than moving through one line at a time in msconfig (I have a lot of processes running), is there a more elegant solution? Is there a safe program that I should install or should eNod have what I need?
