open an Eevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

It looks like you didn't use an Elevated Command Prompt - please try again....

To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

Noel, I am sorry but I overlooked something in the very beginning of this string of post. My Windows 7 os was NOT installed by my work. I mixed something up and typed the wrong thing. Therefore, I have the code that is on the back of the disk cover of the Dell Drivers and Utilities (already installed on your computer) cd.....if that means anything anymore!

OK - then let's see what we can find (having just reviewed the thread, I see we've missed some steps)


run the CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from a Recovery Environment boot.

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
then type the following command

CHKDSK <drive>: /R

and wait for it to complete - it could take a few hours, depending on the size of the drive.

Once complete, type

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

Post another MGADiag report

I ran the scannow command but am not sure exactly what to report to you before I reboot. It says it scans integrity of all protected sys files and repairs problems when possible. No repair operation is preformed. For offline repair, select the offline boot directory. Verified only.

That sounds as if you got the command wrong somehow?

If you found the Windows folder on drive C:
then the command would be (with exaggerated spaces for clarity - assuming the forum software doesn't trim them!)

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=C:\ /OFFWINDIR=C:\Windows

EDIT - sometimes I hate the software here! Let's try it in a Code Box....

Noel, I have finished the scannow command and when I typed exit, I chose the option to reboot the computer. I am not sure how/where to get the MGAdiag report you requested. During the chkdsk scan, "windows checked and found no problems" and 'unable to obtain a handle to the event log."

Sorry about the MGADiag thing - it's a holdover from the usual context I use that post (thinking, though - it may give us a clue as to what's happening.)

Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.


The CheckSUR log is in the same place as the SFC log - C:\Windows\logs\CBS - filenames are CheckSUR.log and CBS.log

The 'unable to obtain a handle to the event log' is (I think) normal for an Offline CHKDSK scan, as the Event Services aren't running , so can't do anything.
