Hi all,

I'm having problems with windows 7 and am not very comuter literate, so hope you can help me in simple terms!

In fact, my computer has been working fine, connecting to the internet fine etc. Yesterday, windows 7 did some auto-updates, and now despite an active internet connection, neither explorer or firefox will go online, claiming a problem with the proxy server (i don't know what this is....?)

I'm sure there is just some setting that needs to be changed, but any help you can give me to sort this out would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I have another thread going also about lost internet activity. After reading your post, I realized that my internet also started giving me trouble right after a Windows Update? Maybe one of the latest updates messes something up in the config?

Actually there are several threads where Network, IR device and USB devices have stopped working in the past week. It could possibly have corrupted the driver for the network card.
I would consider removing the Network card driver and shutting down the PC and boot into Safe Mode with Networking and turn off Automatic updates then opt to be notified which means you say yea or nay on an update, if you have network access in Safe Mode restart into normal mode and verify you have solved your issue then load the updates either one at a time or similar ones at one time, i.e. Security patches etc.

Try this:

Go to Internet explorer/ internet options/ connections/ lan settings
disable: detect automatic configuration

Maybe some names will be a bit different in English because i use Dutch language

I had to do this after an update this week and Google Chrome started very slow and
started to detect proxy settings

Hi I ran across this same issue after I updated VMware. Found this on the internet;
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-7/windows-7-cannot-connect-to-internet/
After going around and around trying different things what ended up fixing this was step 7 in the above document. Going to the network card and just simply disabling and re-enabling.
For the less tech savy, here are the instructions;
Go to the Network and Sharing Center and right-click on your network card ( I chose Lan connection) and choose Disable. Then simply re-enable it and see if this fixes your problem. Worked for me!
