Hello,

About two weeks ago I started getting an error message when I start up my PC. I have searched the next about this and tried to most common cure but no change. I think I got hit with a bug and now I have a damaged OS. Please see the attached image of the error message.

Any advice would be helpful. I have tried system restore, but it has never worked for me in the past and it did not work this time either. Am I going to have to wipe my HD and re-install everything? If so what would be a great antivirus program. I have tried quit a few over the years and non seem to be any better than any other.

Thanks,
Bruce

I thought I may easily be able to spot the item in your startup programs list....but alas its not obvious.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\user extensions and have a look at any files there to see if you can work out what software that folder refers to.

Thanks,

I tried that and the only thing that comes up is the error message. Nothing else is displayed. So I'm still trying to figure this out.

I already have Revo. When I open it, it shows I have 41 installations. But I don't see where it lists things I've deleted or removed? B.

OK. Remove all items from the Startup, except for your antivirus, then reboot. Does the error message still pop-up?

Okay I got it. I opened my C drive and clicked on windows, then clicked system 32, then clicked on tasks, and deleted four programs I did not recognize which appeared to have been installed around the time my problem began. They were Genius Box, Tidy Network Update, Validate Installation, Check Updates.

Do you recognize any of these? B.

The first one is adware. You can study Google results to try to figure out where they came from, possibly sneakware in a freeware program you installed? It may have been neutralized by your protection and was flailing at Startup.

What I'd do next is download, install declining trial, run a full scan with both Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Next check your browsers' Add-On's and Extensions to disable any but Flash, a Reader helper, and Google as sole search - any odd Search is a strong hint of malware bundle. SAS will alert you if it's already uninstalled any.

Go through Programs and Features list with a fine tooth comb. Google any you don't recognize.

Once clean, run SFC /SCANNOW Command to check for damaged system files.
