Hello! New to WE 7 and laptops/touchpads, I initially created havoc in WE libraries copying files etc unintentionally. I gradually sorted out the Libraries but find that I do not have the WE Favourites 3 default file folders (Desktop etc.) showing. Favourites will not expand. If I look under my User Account I can see the folders; I cannot seem to copy or move them into WE Favourites! Can any more experienced WE user help me - without having to do a Restore?
Cheers

Huge thanks Maranello And Brink for your suggestions!

I am a real novice so please bear with me here in Edinburgh. When I look in the user folders, Links and Recent Places are absent, presumably deleted by me: this presumably is my main problem. Contacts absent too. Therefore I cannot check the default locations. Do the Favorites' default files usually have a location of Users/User Name/Links/xxxx?

How do I restore/recreate these missing files? Is it by running the REG File Download or manual fix listed in the (Brink)tutorial - or do these procs need files to pre-exist?

Thanks in advance

Brink - thanks again!
I have followed the tutorial and noted a message saying that the registry locations have been successfully updated. However, when I entered shell:Contacts into the "search programs & files" and clicked on the file returned, it did not open anything I could see. Having restarted several times I cannot see any new Contacts user folder. Still keen to recreate my missing user folders: any ideas?
Cheers
Brendan

Brendan,

What path do you have for the {56784854-C6CB-462B-8169-88E350ACB882} string value at this other registry location below? It should be C:\Users\User-Name\Contacts by default.

Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

Missing User Folders

Brink - good morning from Scotland! (I had a Texas holiday in 2005 - thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly Big Bend.)

I have checked the Registry location you cited in your reply yesterday. The path for the string value is indeed C:\Users\User-Name (Brendan)\Contacts.

Does this mean the update definitely worked? If so, then how do I get the folder to show in the user folders? I feel so close but yet....

By the way, I did sort out the Favourites issues. Just missing proper My Music, My Pictures user folders, i.e. ones with a locations tab, and a couple of others like Contacts.

Looking forward to your thoughts...
Cheers
Brendan

Brendan,

For the duplicates or improper user folders without the "Location" properties tab, you will need to backup their contents up to another location, then delete all of them. Afterwards, make sure that those user folders are set to have the default location using "OPTION TWO" in the tutorial instead.

Missing Contacts Folder

Shawn/Brink

Thanks for the extra advice on backing up content and deleting the "false" user folders before using the tutorial option two. Will do!

But back to my last reply: having corrected the default file location for Contacts using the tutorial and restarted several times, why can't I see a "new" Contacts folder in my user folders?

Cheers

Missing Contacts Folder

Jacee

Thanks for contributing and trying to solve my problem! I am not a techie or developer, just a basic user and therefore nervous about about downloading tools and changing registry entries, etc. Which element of the tool you recommend would I use if I downloaded it?

I have followed Brink's advice and reset the default file folder location for Contacts with his tutorial. My current issue is that despite this and several restarts, I cannot see or find any evidence of a Contacts folder. Therefore there is nothing I can right-click on to display attributes, etc. Any ideas?

Cheers
Brendan
