Windows Explorer Crashing

Hi,

For a while now, my system has not been closing down properly every night.

I check that every program is closed then go to start > Shut down, and it does shut down, but not before very quickly displaying a "Force Shut Down" error, as if a program is still open.

Secondly, every moring when I switch the PC on, as soon as I attempt to do anything using the mouse or keyboard, Windows Explorer gives me a box that says:

" W.E. has stopped working
...
Restart the program"

so I click Restart and get on with my day.

But now I have noticed it also does the same thing if I attempt to Right Click on any folder to find out the Properties.

It just keeps crashing, so I can't find out how much space I've got left in any folder, and I know my 250gb C drive is nearly full up, so this could be a problem. (I was planning on transferring big chunks to make room, when I can get a third external HDD.)

Anyone know how I can fix this please?

Also is there another way of finding Properties of a folder without Right Clicking?

Thanks a lot

Hi

Sorry for the delay. I am not ungrateful for your responses to my problem. I had another malware problem and had a few teething problems using SpyBot Search and Destroy which I had to sort out first.

Thinking of buying the upgrade in fact, as I use my PC for work.

Grab a copy of Explorer++ Portable - extract the files to a folder on your desktop and run the executable. Navigate to a problem folder and right click. Post a screenshot of the menu. Like this:Edit: Forgot link:

OK here is my screenshot of the first task Explorer++ :

2en6ihi.jpg

Not sure what that tells you, but that's what I get if I Right Click on the C drive within Explorer++. If I Right Click on the C drive directly it makes Windows Explorer crash again.

What does Explorer++ do exactly? I tried Googling it, but it didn't register the ++ and just gave me results for Explorer.

What do I do next regarding Explorer++ please? Thanks

I'll do the other suggestions once I've completed the first one, or I'll get confused.

thanks a lot

Can't see any screenshot that you posted. Explorer++ runs independently of explorer so gets around any issues with shell extensions (right click context menu entries)

Anyway without even waiting for you to provide any logs I see that you mention Spybot S&D and I've seen that cause exactly your problem in the past.

Try this for possible issues with Spybot S&D shell integration (right click menu).

Open Spybot (right click on icon and "Run as Administrator")
Click "Advanced User Mode"
Select Settings and click "System Integration" tab
Uninstall "Windows Explorer Integration"
Click "Apply" and "Ok".
You can also launch settings using the icon in the System Tray.

Reboot when done and see if that fixed it!

If not continue with posting screenshots from AutoRuns (Explorer tab)

Heres the download link for Exporer++ as posted twice already!

https://explorerplusplus.com/download

Download the file and save to your desktop. Right click the folder and unzip into a new folder on your desktop.

Open the folder you unzipped and run the Explorer++.exe exexutable.

In the window that opens right click on a drive. If you see a context menu take a screenshot and post it please.

Thanks Callender. I already did that.

Here's a direct link in case the screenshot is not showing:

Did I do it wrong?
If not, what info does that tell you?

thanks

That worked!

I can now Right Click on the C drive without W.E. crashing! BUT is that a permanent solution?

What was Explorer integrated with before? And how do I know it won't be integrated with it again?

thanks a lot Callender

RE: Screenshot. Suspect that Spybot is the problem.

I only noticed it crashed on Right Click since installing SpyBot. But Explorer would crash on Startup before I installed SpyBot.

I suppose that means Explorer was integrated with SpyBot! - which means my previoius qustion must now seem like a stupid one!

OK thanks

Yes Spybot doesn't play well with explorer if you integrate it's context menu entry (right click menu)

That solves the right click crash issue. If you are getting other crashes when file browsing let us know.
