Windows Genuine but won't activate

Hi there;

I'm hoping for some help that will allow me to move forward without having to do a restore of my OS to the factory defaults.

I bought an Acer VM4630G from a local ACER distributor here in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I offer this information to establish that I KNOW this is a genuine version of Windows 7 Professional. I believe, or as I can best recall, it came with SP1 and the box itself was bought in April 2014 with a 3 year business warranty.

The OS has been working fine until a few months ago when it started reporting that the copy of Windows on the machine was not genuine. After doing a bunch of research, which included my pulling the keys from the OS with a key finder, I removed the 2 apparently offending update patches (KB 3004394 and 971033) and lost the 'not genuine tag' and black screen.

The problem is, however, that the OS will not activate. I get a message that says the key is not valid. Using a key finder, I found that I have two keys. The first is a "Windows (BIOS OEM Key)" and the second is "Windows 7 Professional 00371-OEM-8992671-00004 Service Pack 1". (I have not shown the keys for the obvious reason - If you require a partial on the keys, please let me know.) What I can confirm is that the information shown in the 'diagnostic report' is not the BIOS OEM Key and does match the last 3 groups of the key in the report. This box does not have a Windows sticker on the outside. I have not looked inside but this is only because the box is in use at a remote location and I have not been back there yet. I do have remote access though.

After attempting to activate the OS (and I have only 3 days for the activation) I get a dialogue box that offers three suggestions, none of which seem to be of any value.

  • I'm not going to buy a new operating system key from Microsoft;
  • I don't have a different key to type in, other than the BIOS key and it doesn't do anything with that;
  • Calling ACER, which I have done, is a waste of time because there standard response is to do a Default System Restore from the Restore partition on the drive. This action must be the absolute last resort for me. I have too much time and money invested in the software installed on this system to give up without a fight.
So, here I am, asking for help, hoping that someone can guide me to a safe/reasonable/quick solution.

Thank you

Welcome to our forum Beroldb.

I have looked at you log and found this.

Time remaining: 42840 minute(s) (29 day(s))
I'm no expert in such matters but have done some research and found your problem is over my pay grade.

Be advise you must have KB971033 installed.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971033

From you posts

I removed the 2 apparently offending update patches (KB 3004394 and 971033) and lost the 'not genuine tag' and black screen.
Our expert is Noel and he is not online at this time.

While waiting for Noel you could try sfc /scannow and report any errors.
The information could be helpful to Noel. Can't hurt anything.

This tutorial by Brink could be helpful.

Are you having any other problems with the computer?

Do I understand correctly you are trying to repair this system remotely?

Just a note:
This is the first post I have seen that uses this
Antivirus AVG Cloudcare
Do your other working system use the same anti virus?

Not to butt in here, but I had the same thing happen to me..

I bought a used Dell desktop, with a fresh install of Windows 7. Hey it worked fine did the updates and everything else..

But then came Windows 10 and it downloaded and was installed. I didn't care for win. 10 so I asked to remove it.. But Microsoft does a fresh install of windows 7 not the previous one I had..

This is where I found out that I had no Key.....The person who I bought this machine off of refurbishes computers and sells them all with the same key.. You are only allowed one key per machine.. I had to shelve the machine..

Binkie, I believe you can still hunt down and purchase either an OEM or Microsoft Windows 7, I bought the Pro version for my computers. It was not cheap! However, I have legal-beagles :)

Yea I knew that, I did check this out.. The machine is old, so it's just for parts now..

Probably wait until I need another machine then get Win. 10..

Thanks for your reply..

Thank you Layback Bear.

I will reinstall the KJ 971033 which will bring back the WAT folder and programs and try it again. I'm not certain how much difference that will make but, more will be revealed.

With regards to working remotely - I'm using LogMeIn and have full control of the machine, more so than would be available to me in a normal Terminal session. I do almost all of my computer maintenance using this method and whilst there are some limitations, none that get in the way of what I'm doing right now.

With regards to AVG Cloudcare - I use this AV solution with all of the systems that I manage and so far, I don't seem to get a 'normal' amount of false positives which are dealt with fairly quickly by AVG when reported.

There is another Veriton, in fact the exact same model as this one, bought on the same invoice, with almost all the same software installed, on the LAN (not more than 10 feet away), and it's functioning perfectly.

I will post the sfc /scannow results in an added post to the thread.

Again, thank you for your interest and help.

I've run the SFC /scannow and have a huge file of data as a result. I have no idea what I'm supposed to be looking for so I cannot tell you what errors have occurred.

The log is huge and exceeds the limits for an upload on this forum.

I can make it available as a download if required.

The BIOS is dated 2015, and Acer is not renowned for producing updated BIOS.
The problem here is almost certainly that the machine shipped with Windows 8 Core edition installed - or no Windows at all.
As such it has no SLIC table to be able to activate the OEM_SLP Key in use.

Is there a COA sticker for Windows 7 on the case?
Is there a Windows 8 sticker - or a Windows 8 Pro sticker on the case?

showkey, http://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/2577-showkey.html will tell you if there is a Windows OEM marker in the BIOS or an Embedded Windows 8 key. Even if you know the OEM-SLP key, it's useless without the matching custom OEM install media. My guess is the OEM-SLP activation is broken and it's now trying to activate online. Factory OEM-SLP installs don't activate online, they activate against the BIOS SLIC table. The factory OEM_SLP key is deliberately blocked from online activation. If you can find a COA sticker with a readable key, it should work. You may have to remove the battery to find it. Another option is to backup any files you don't want to lose to external media, then do a factory recovery. That would put it back to the OOBE, out of the box experience. The way it was the first time you turned it on.
