Success ... BUT ...

1. I did not uninstall as "Administrator" icnic:
2. During the uninstall of four old nDivia apps, two wanted to restart. I didn't, and bypassed reboot until all were uninstalled.icnic:

- requested "Restart" -- I opted for "Restart Later"
- Revouninstaller continued through to finish. No files to delete
- uninstalled

- cannot be uninstalled "A system restart is required. Restart and try again"
- only option offered was "Cancel"
- I cancelled, and Revouninstaller continued.
- uninstalled
nDividia PhysX
- uninstalled
- found 171 files to "Delete" ie, "carefully select files to be deleted"
C:\ProgramData\Bitdefender\Desktop\Temp\BDIDW ... folder and contents
- 95 files .json various dates
C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp ... folder and contents
- various folders + .bmp (x1), log (x5), txt (x1), .mtx (x3) files
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp ... folder and contents
** about 20 DLL files ... made me very nervous.

- disappeared at some stage but not by me

I did not delete any files in the whole process
BIG MISTAKE (I think)
The/this Toshiba is running well -- graphics are sharper (Desktop, I don't play any games)
BUT one application' "Metapad" still leaves a trail of grey rectangles when the window is dragged.

Metapad also has an option to "always on top" but it only AOT intermittently).
I did a clean install/update of Metapad about 3 weeks ago​

I suspect this Toshiba would be healthier with a clean install (using ISO+ media update) file.
This Toshiba is crucial at the moment, because I am white-knuckle-riding through a Dell laptop, downgrade from Win8 to Win7, using ISO file to dump the Dell crap. The Dell is crucial at the moment, so getting this Toshiba running on 5 cylinders will suffice until the Dell is completed. Then the Dell will be my lifeline to "sevenforums.com"

The Toshiba did not blow up or die during this process. Nor did I ... !

Right now I am planning on ...

1. Uninstall all nVidia programs as Administrator
2. Restart when the uninstall process says so
3. Delete files that I think can be removed
4. Reboot -- hot or cold ?
5. Install "314.22 WHQL" again
6. Reboot

Deleting those files is my worry, especially the DLL files.

I would appreciate your comments

The safe-mode look-alike is normal when the graphics driver is being installed or removed.
It's a habit to restart after any change is being made with regards to system files, more so
if the installer / wizard requests that to be completed.


The files in the Temp directory are intended to be deleted at some point, hence the name Temp .
The DLL's, it depends what is using them. If you're unsure then just let them be.

1. Yes you could, but the user that installed them will suffice as well.
2. Correct, you should .
3. This is not an absolute must, we suggest that in order to prevent any chance of conflict that
may occur but it mostly doesn't, either way the Driver Sweeper tutorial is back up .
4. Hot reboot is just fine.
5. After uninstalling .
6. Following the quote will ensure best results .

Is that the only application to cause that to happen?

I 70% suspect Metapad (in always-on-top mode) might be the cause.
Problem appears to be very obvious when many (10-15) windows are open of various apps.
It also appears that Firefox might be an antagonist in conjunction with Metapad.

Yesterday before nVidia driver upgrade/clean-install, multiple trailing images of Windows Explorer were as disconcerting as VB Screenupdating(False) ... dozens of WinExp duplicate windows until I released the mouse-button.

The Toshiba laptop is my first Win7 OS. The lappy setup has taken quite a beating as I grieved for XP UI and experimented with Classic Shell and many other UI apps.
It is only months since I have heard of Restore Points and Images ... and looked under the hood of any PC.
More learning to come ...

Today (after yesterday's nVidia driver replacement, and todays cold boot) it has all settled down
Just disabled Metapad always-on-top, and not a skerric of sluggish refresh. (6 windows - 5 apps - open)

I like Metapd (alternative text editor) with its very small installed size, 212 KB ... and ... always on top (optional) ... and ... URLS can be links (optional). Have been using Metapad since 2003 without fault.

This laptop is for web browsing, emails and Sonos control only. Five other standalone PCs to do the grunt work (AutoCad, Excel, MS-Word)

BackGround: Solid "DarkBlue" -- no wallpaper

Its done, and all is working.
Interestingly, with the second attempt I did not get any "registry" nor any "file" deletions.
When wizard says "Restart" that is exactly what MUST be done.
(I did not restart until after Revouninstaller finished each nVidia item uninstall)
Also "Administrator" mode is paramount.
Several tools I had installed as "User" (not administrator) were not available in admin-mode, so I had to uninstall two tools/apps in user-mode and then re-install in admin-mode, before starting driver uninstall/upgrade.

Driver Sweeper is no longer available (withdrawn due to hazardous extras in current versions of "driversweeper.exe") so I trusted free Revounstaller to uninstall and clean up leftovers.
(This second attempt did not reveal any registry items nor files to be deleted ??)

How I did it.

1. assembled a list (on TXT file) of ALL steps, including "reboots"
2. created a PDF of page #1 of this thread, ie, instructions by YoYo155 and Arc post #6 of this thread
   Used Firefox addin Print Pages to PDF. to create the PDF of web page
3. Downloaded new driver file 314.22 WHQL as per "Arc's instructions (on PDF)
   Virus checked the download with (free) VirusTotal
   Virus checked with desktop AV and malware checked with free "Malwarebytes"
4. steps-list and PDF file of instructions were copied to another PC (they could be printed)
5. closed ALL apps and programs
6. Log out as user
   ----------
7. Log in as Administrator
   -- all subsequent uninstalls and ultimate install of new driver in "Administrator mode"
8. open WinExplorer
9. copied "314.22 WHQL" file to Administrator desktop
10. closed WinExplorer
11. Revouninstaller -- open (I use free Revouninstaller) -- allow changes to PC
    There is a lot of logging off as user and logging on as administrator during this process.
    NEVER be tempted to "skip" anything. In my first attempt I did skip, with scary consequences.
12. deleted each occurence of a nVidia item
    - restarted after Revouninstaller "Finished" with each nVidia item.
    - do not restart in middle of REvo process els you will miss Registry clean option and files to delete options
    - never be tempted to miss a restart/reboot
    - ** Windows desktop will change to VGA ugly UI, do not panic -- press on
13. logged in as administrator after each reboot + reopened Revouninstaller for each subsequent nVidia uninstal, feels tedious I know,
    never take shortcuts. Restart is crucial when instructed AFTER Revounstaller "Finishes"
14. checked Windows Explorer for any left over files in the "old" nVidia installation folder
15. manually deleted ALL left over files in the old folder.
16. ran CCleaner and carefully processed nVidia specific registry items and files
    Never do a blanket clean, if in doubt, leave it.
17. Run desktop file "314.22-notebook-win8-win7-32bit-international-whql.exe" on desktop
18. refer to PDF of "Arc's" instructions of option settings
19. install takes quite a while, be patient, sometimes there appears to be no activity, wait !
20. when finished ...
21. delete desktop copy of "314.22-notebook-win8-win7-32bit-international-whql.exe"
22. log out as administrator
23. reboot

... Done !

The process was not as difficult as I expected.

Just be diligent with each and every step.
