Windows is trying to place 4000 picture files onto desktop

Explorer.exe is freezing because it is trying to dump 4000 picture files onto my desktop. I've already tried system restore but it stll keeps trying to dump the files onto my desk top. Is there anyway to get it to stop?
I was only able to access the Internet file help from the task manager.

Not sure how that would happen in the first place and not at all sure what "dump" means exactly or what options you did to do it could you explain ?

For future reference ctrl+z will undo a mistake in moving or pasting something but it does have to be used directly after meaning it undoes the last action.

Yes but when you restart explorer it wants to open the desktop with 4000 picture files all over again.

I was trying to drag ONE file from the folder to the desk top. Unfortunately I seem to have clicked "select all"
before trying to move the one file.
It happens.

Yeah I've got into the habit of using right click drag and drop
After dropping it shows four options
Copy too
Move too
Create shortcut too
And my personal favorite Cancel

Too late for cancel.
Explorer keeps locking and has been restarted at least 20 times now.

Bad thing is it's actually moving files and not pasting so shutting down you will loose your files if it does not complete or you interrupt it

Not sure I follow.
I deleted the folder the files moved the files from. The CPU is thrashing because there are far too many files on the desk top. I need an alternative shell so I can delete the files from the desktop folder.
