windows isn't getting updates

everytime m hitting 'checking for updates' a pop op windows is showing something like "WINDOWS UPDATE CAN'T CURRENTLY CHECK FOR UPDATES, BECAUSE SERVICE IS'NT RUNNING. YOU MAY NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER".
Services like BITS and wupserv are already enabled. but the problem still persist.
help plzzzz.....

How do I reset Windows Update components?

This is rather lengthy but does go through the whole process of resetting update components.
Did Windows Update work before? When did it quit working? What was done between these times?
Previous System Restore Point before problem? Most recent backup prior it not working?
Complete system backup images are fundamental in restoring little things like this.

windows update never worked since i had installed this OS. various software's are not being installed due to some errors which can be resolved only after updating windows. even windows isn't pirated .
i also tried microsoft fixit , nd windows troubleshooter ,but all that was crap. nothing worked.
i will be highly grateful to that bright minded guy who can help me regarding this problem....

i got the solution.....here it is..
in administrative tools ..first disable windows update service..then in comnd prompt..u wud have to type.."%windir%"..then u wud have to rename the software distribution folder by any name temporarily..then u will have to enable the windows update service which u have had disable earlier...nd here all done.i hope ur problem wud hv been solved now..
