Now one thing I have done in the past is when the COA sticker is getting pretty worn is to make up a small amount of two pack glue something like Araldite (the five minute cure stuff is ideal) which dries clear and spreading a thin layer of this over the sticker and like wetting things sometimes makes the detail/letters more legible. The added bonus is the sticker is protected forever by the hardened glue

The below is my personal subjective opinion and as such not intended to be taken personally, nor should it be taken as critic.

I've never had this issue. Whenever I get a new laptop or desktop with a pre-installed Windows, or software with a key sticker in the box, I take a photo of that, paste it to OneNote with additional information about for which device / software package it belongs. OneNote syncs this information to my OneDrive, from where I can always find the information when needed.

I do the same with serial and product keys received per email; I copy & paste the information to OneNote.

To "backup" this information I write the same in an Excel workbook, which is also synced to my OneDrive.

For me, a story like "my COA sticker is unreadable, please give me a key" is either a story about a lazy user or a try to get a pirated copy of Windows activated.

LOL... I hear you... I often used to think the same thing whenever I read a post from someone claiming that their COA sticker was worn or missing until I personally encountered a problem with the COA sticker on my laptop. It's nothing extreme like being completely illegible/worn/missing etc. (there's only one character which I cannot identify). But I purchased this laptop (brand new) back in early 2010 from Fry's Electronics, so I now believe it is possible.

In some cases it might also be a story about a user who wasn't careful enough to prepare for the future".

Writing the code on a piece of masking tape, then putting it in the battery compartment works great too, you can then cover that with scotch tape so it doesn`t wear away.

On a desktop I write it on the inside with a sharpie.

Yep I do exactly the same myself now Kari my glue method I used when I had to use my old trusty Toshiba and the code was getting a little tatty.
I also keep codes passwords and important info on my android now too any codes I bring up with MJB for example I snip ans save to Picrures and mail that all to myself so that on my six machines I have six copies in fact way too much replication I suppose

One thing to watch with using multiple copies on synchronized devices is that if you accidentally delete an item on one device before you know it they have been deleted everywhere
