Solved Windows Live Mail - 2 accounts same address

When I go to WLM, 2 accounts are shown, both with the same e-mail address. One is the default. I always use the default account. I would like to remove the 2nd one because I see no need for it. The problem is, if I compose an e-mail & put it in draft before sending, when I do send the message it is sent from the 2nd account. and not the default account where I typed the original message. This does not make sense to me and I don't know why I have 2 accounts with the same address. If I remove the 2nd account will my drafts be sent from the default account?

Very clear. But difficult to understand why it is happening!
You don't have any message rules which could be redirecting?
Frankly, I would move the extra account to a safe place, and see what happens.

davehc: Thanks for the reply. How do I move it to a safe place? If I go to accounts I can remove it, but I do not know where it will go. When I click on remove will it ask me where to save the account?

I don't know anything about message rules, don't think I have any.

Got a new modem from ATT and in their great wisdom their setup program re-setup my e-mail account in Windows Mail. I just moved all of saved items, etc, from the folders in the old account to the new account and removed the old account. As long as you understand how to set up your client there shouldn't be a problem deleting one of the accounts.

Make sure you know:

Correct e-mail address
Type and names of incoming/outgoing servers
Your password
What type of authentication

Collect a screen shot of the Advanced tab to make sure you can fill that data in if there is a problem. I think it's a good idea to know all of that stuff anyway to help setup your account in the future.

Rance, my modem is from Qwest (now CenturyTel) and it is not old. I really don't think I need a new modem. Computers do funny things and it is hard to find answers. I am hoping I can just remove the 2nd account and it will work fine, but I need some answers first so I don't lose everything. Thanks for replying.

You misunderstand, or rather I blathered on and confused you. What I am saying is when a duplicate account appeared in MY Windows Mail, I simply copied the e-mails from the various folders into the new account and deleted the old account. I would just be clear to advice you to record all of your settings and keep them in a safe place.

The information about each profile is actually located in the Windows Registry. Maybe one of the gurus will stop by and explain how those keys can be extracted and saved. Otherwise, just go through the account properties and record all of those settings for future reference. Deleting the un-used account shouldn't hurt anything.

By the by. There is function located under the File menu of Windows Mail that allows you to export Messages and/or Accounts. Those can then be re-imported or imported to another machine.

Your accounts are found under:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

I have always found it convenient, as I reinstall numerous times, to create an entirely independant Mail box, preferably on another partition/HD.
Then, in the Advanced options, you change the storage to that folder (mine is called, surprise!, MailBox.). However often you mess with your original OS installation, you reset the Advanced options to the mailbox and it picks up all the boxes again, intact

I did it. I exported the 2nd acct. which went to My Docs. Sure hope I never have to import it! Then I removed the acct., sent myself a message, put in draft first & then sent. It was sent from the default acct. just like it should.

Some of the information provided was a little over my head, so I was confused about some of the instructions. I did not find "Advanced Options" and messing with the registry is not something I would attempt.

Thanks to both of you I was able to do what I wanted to accomplish. Now that I am registered with sevenforums you will probably hear from me again!
