I'd use Outlook if it was free or very low cost and going to continue with support.
I've been using
WLM Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3555.0308)
Copyright © 2010 Microsoft Corporation
and it has met my needs. If WLM 2012 is going south then I guess so will WLM 2011.
Some people above are questioning the future support for Thunderbird!
So what client should you use and how do you migrate from WLM???
Well, if they are getting rid of POP/IMAP then I'm pretty much stuck with access through the browser only, which will be a pain as I have more than one account. Work, personal, mailing and 2 Gmail accounts which are all accessed using WLM 2012. Apparently we'll still be able to access Gmail though, but I might as well just use my browser if I can no longer use WLM to access my hotmail.
