ok granted this isnt strictly a seven issue, but everyone here has been very helpful so i thought id approach you with this.

Both in xp, and windows 7, nothing having anything to do with windows live will work for me.

Id been using pidgin and Windows live messenger side by side for sometime, but after uninstaliing pidgin, i havent been able to log into windows live messenger. i reinstalled it and still no joy.

Windows live messenger gave me the error code 80048820

there are some standard steps given by every single site ive visited

as entailed here Windows Live Help

ive tried every single one of these and i still get the same message. i cant load up hotmail anymore and even my yousendit express app cant sign in, but i can view/use any other website/service/program.

if anyone has any ideas i would really really appreciate it, i really need to get my messenger back up and running

Hmm... thats very odd, I'll give it a greater look later if its not resolved by then. Have you tried using/creating an alternate live account? That might help determine where exactly the problem lies. If it doesn't work on either XP or 7, it sounds like it might be something to do with your account or some sort of settings specifically.

Check that your firewall isn't blocking those 'key ports'...

no idea what the keyports are though, thats the problem, nortons set to allow windows live, so the only other explanation is my router. what i dont understand is why would the router suddenly decide to block off ports that have been working for weeks?

and its not just windows live messenger, i cant login to hotmail through a browser either, and live mesh cant connect.

Maybe you have had your account closed for some reason, try making a new one to see if you can log in with that.

yep tried from another comp at home and same problem. any idea whether an ISP DNS problem could cause windows live specifically to stop working?

love my wacom pen and pressure sensitivity...
wished it worked in 7, SUSE for that matter though
might sound funny, but i seem to have experienced somewhat of an identical incident as yours. live messenger was working fine for me. installed win 7 this evening, installed live messenger (the latest one).. not signing in.. showing different results everytime.. "contact list not available", "gateway offline", "cannot reach server" etc..

having no solutions, i have started using pidgin. live messenger still aint working. :(

It seems that this program 'pidgin' is the culprit. Must admit I've never heard of it.

In MSN, go to Accounts -> Your MSN account -> Edit Account -> Advanced.

What should be there is:

Server: messenger.hotmail.com
Port: 1863

Use HTTP: not checked
Show Custom Smileys: checked

Proxy Type: Use Global Proxies.

If you don't have these settings, try them. If you do have these settings, try checking the Use HTTP box.

Also, check Windows Firewall that that port isn't blocked.
