Windows logon needs to close before computer can shutdown.

Click shutdown
Shutdown process starts then hangs at a message "A program needs to close - Windows Logon". Let it set for a couple minutes and it may or may not complete the shutdown process. Sometimes I have to click the Forced button.

Does not do this if restart is clicked.

Thsi is not a good idea. Leave the registry alone.

whs, generally it will complete the shutdown in 2 min or so but have had times that I have left thinking it would shutdown and it would still be there the next morning. Also to your point about the registry. Working on the registry is not an issue as I have extensive experience in this area and have no fear of it.

Debbie B, I have ran CCleaner registry cleaner numerous times since this started some time ago. Did not resolve the issue.

I know that the source of this issue will end up being something simple that I have over looked - just can't find it!

Have not found a reason as to why windows logon takes so long or sometimes will not let windows close but did find a workaround.

1. Click the start button
2. Type regedit in the search box
3. Open regedit
4. In the left column, click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SUSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Control
5. In the right column, double click WaitToKillServiceTimeout
6. Replace the numbers in the Value Data box with 1000
7. Click OK
8. Close regedit
9. Restart the computer. Might still get the force restart box on the first reboot but subsequent restarts or shutdowns will no longer display the box.

If you use this registry alteration, you must remember to save anything you are working on before clicking on restart or shutdown as the faster action may cause you to loose any work you do not save.

I would still like to know the primary cause of this issue.
