"Windows mail could not be started. error 80041161

9th Jan 2014: After installing WLE 2012 my WLM will not start - it gives the error above.

The download and installation went through to completion - or so it seemed.

After the install one instance of wlmail.exe seems to exist - as below
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Mail\",
but, dated 5th Feb 2013, NOT 9th Jan 2014.

I tried a REPAIR in Uninstall/Repair programs on Windows Live Mail which seemed to run through OK.

How to get WLM running again?

Do I assume the email storage folders and contacts are gone?

Any help greatly appreciated.

In the Start menu search box, type:
services

at the top of the results box, click on services (with gear icon)
scroll down the list to
Windows Live ID sign-in Login Assistant
double click that service
set startup type to
automatic
click OK
startup type is in a drop down box near the middle of the window

on the left hand side of the services window
click Start the service

close the serices window

try WEMail

Malwarebytes Pro protection enabled, no firewall.

Avast (paid for) firewall is on.

Windows firewall is off.

Draytek Vigor 2710 router firewall is on.

Do you mean it was started or you had to start it?

Is this an update from 2009, 2011, or is it a fresh install? (I'm guessing an update)

Did you install using the web installer or the offline installer?

I recommend the offiline installer, but I have to find it.

the only possible problem I see, is your using 2 AV programs. Remove MBAM Pro. as Avast is IMHO much better.

The two compliment each other and will not clash - keep both installed for maximum protection.

I agree with you Rode, that two real-time AV programs running at the same time just asking for trouble. They will chew up resources, cause conflicts and fight each other thinking the other AV pgm is up-to-no-good. This causes many BSODs and other system resource problems.

Most on-demand scanners pose no issues with a running real-time AV program.

Many users here use that combination have have never reported clashes. In addition, you can ensure this by setting exclusions:

Thanks for responses - I have switched off MBAM live scanning, we'll see what that brings.

The suggested thread post:

by Chestnutt offered hope; but after finding and running the utility "wlarp.exe" and turning off MBAM live scanning The same error displays.

What I cannot be sure of is which wlmail.exe to be running. Where are the installed application files and DLL's and stuff? I may be always running a bad copy of the executable.

muymalestado: your mail and contacts are probably intact. Updates and reinstalls do not affect user data.
After you answer questions I asked in Post# 7 it will be easier to devise a plan
You might want to download the offline install, but don't do anything with it - just download it for now

Sorry - shouldn't expect me to do two things at once; what, with only one brain. Ah, but four cores so I should be able to handle it.

#7: This was update from 2011 as I recall. And the advice was to uninstall then reinstall. So I am reinstalling and receiving the same 80041161 error message.

When you say you are reinstalling, did you use the offline install? I'm assuming yes, but better to check, than waste your time chasing somethiing else.

I used the web-install, but have now downloaded the wlsetup-all.exe here. Not done anything with it.

Ok, sorry to tell you this, but....

Completely uninstall Windows Essentails (WE) through Control Panel -> Progams and Features

Restart the machine (probably not necessary, but since you're having WE issues, go ahead and restart)

Install WE using wlsetup-all.exe

and we shall see on your next post if you have a working WE
