You have another option: You can turn off Windows Media Player permanently.

Start > Control Panel > Programs & Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off
Open the Media Features drop down and uncheck Windows Media Player

After a restart, you shouldn't see Windows Media Player again.

I can get as far as 'Programs & Features', but the link to 'Turn Windows Features On or Off' opens WMC.

Seriously, I want to through this laptop outta the window.

Since the laptop doesn't come with any discs I had to hold Alt +F10 and do a restore to factory settings option. This wiped everything - I could copy anything to external 'cos of the virus.

It's now working like new. Thanks for the help!

You could potentially delete files important to running WMC. Without the .exe or certain .dlls (idk if WMC has .dlls, but you get the point) the program can't keep running/interfering. Then you can run mal software removal and restore your system.

Interested to know how it goes.

I have the same problem. WMC from Hell... I cannot run a registry restore, either. Every EXE file is associated with WMC.

I was able to at least get into the control panel and user accounts - I created another administrator account and logged in with that. From that account I was able to turn off Windows Media Center.
