Solved Windows media player running in task manager all the...

Hello !

I googled for windows 7 forum and this was the first site that came up.

So the problem is that windows media player is running in task manager all the times. I have windows 7 of course. Is this normal that its running ? It takes 19 500k of memory.

Maybe it is in conlict with my Logitech G15 keyboard ? The keyboard has lcd and it shows what songs im playing, and maybe it has to do something with the logitech software ?

What OS did you use before Win7? Did you have the same problem? If yes, then you're right, it just might be the keyboard's feature. If not, then it's something about WMP12.
And seeing as WMP takes a lot of your CPU and RAM, if it really bothers you, simply end the process in the Task Manager.

Go to search, go to services. Once there look for media player, maybe windows media player, but I am sure you will find it. Then change from automaitic to manual. If that does not work, go to task scheduler, and change the scheduled start times.

Finally as a lost resort try msconfig>start up and remove the ck mark.

Something will work.

The only service i found is windows media player network sharing service.
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe"
And im pretty sure its not it. Because in my task manager its running as wmplayer.exe 32* (i have 64 bit operating system).

No i had vista before windows 7 and i didnt have that kind of problem.

Any more ideas ? Im gone close all my logitech software and then wmplayer.exe and see what happens.

EDIT: It didnt help and everytime i close windows media player it starts again.
Some windows media player slide show gadget is running aswell.

EDIT: That was the problem! media player slideshow gadget. Anybopdy have any ideas how to stop it from running ? What does it do exactly anyways ?

Go to search type in side show. It should take you to the screen where you can see what its function is and you can shut it down. In my case it is running media player

Stumbled upon this post while working on a different problem but ran into WMP constantly running/restarting after I kill the process. I have a G15 keyboard as well and thought that may have been the issues. I uninstalled the G15 software and used another keyboard and it still happened so I ruled the G15 out as being the culprit.

The last post I saw in this thread directed me to the correct place. I did a start search for "slide show" and dabbled in the uninstall gadgets menu. I uninstalled the WMP gadgets and I was finally able to kill the WMP process.

I believe this also fixed my initial problem which was that changing tracks took 30+ seconds. I had found some information about disabling effects on my audio device but this did not make a difference personally for me and I thought maybe it was because the WMP process was still running so it didn't really process the change. When I got the gadget uninstalled and killed the process it worked but, since I tweaked 2 variables, I needed to find which was the actual resolution. I went and turned the effects back on and still was able to skip songs repeatedly with no delay so that was evidence enough for me.

Now time to play with the G15 end of things more and see if that causes the problem of media continuing to play after I close the WMP window....

If you are using 64-bit Windows, this is a common issue...and in some cases even on 32-bit. A simple Google search turns up a number of results, but no real fixes. Rather than changing services, etc., if you have plenty of memory and it isn't causing problems, I would leave it alone.

I know this thread is old, but i found a solution thats better than "if you got lots of memory ignore it."

I was having the same issue, after closing WMP the wmplayer.exe would continue to run in the background using resources and if I hit play on my keyboard the audio from what I last watched would start playing.

The solution for windows 7:

1. Type sideshow into start menu search, click on "Change windows sideshow settings."

2. Find Windows Media Player under Gadgets, then uncheck the boxes in the row next to it. In my case Windows Media Player was the only Gadget listed, and had 2 check boxes titled "Logitech gamepanel devices (mono)" and "Logitech gameplanel devices (QVGA)"

As you may have guessed I have a Logitech keyboard (G110). The media controls on my keyboard still work with WMP after this change. I suspect that Logitech software may not be the only cause of this issue with sideshow, but any other software using it should be on the list and can simply be unchecked. After doing this my wmplayer.exe no longer continues to run in the background. Hope this helps someone.

After re installing my system yesterday, i noticed that my multimedia keys don't work outside windows media player, so I went to the process list where I closed windows media player fixing my problem but wmp kept restarting it self, so I went to configuration screen and there went to program and features and I de-installed the windows gadget platform, that fixed the problem, only thing you will miss are the windows gadgets
