Windows not genuine error 0xc004f063 after reinstallation on new HDD

I bought this computer about 3 years ago from a friend, but recently the hard drive gave up the ghost. I replaced it and reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium (I had to use a friend's installation CD as I didn't have mine) and used the key I'd pulled from the previous hard drive (I had to use a program as the sticker is unreadable now). It installed and updated fine for about 1 1/2 to 2 months - until today when I was told my copy of Windows was not genuine and, when I tried to authenticate it by reentering the key, was given error code 0xc004f063.

The key code you probably pulled from the HD was the MFG universal key code. It will not work for a re-activation.

That is why the Key Code on the COA sticker is so important and valuable, therefore protected & saved as a hard copy document for the future when needed.

WHOOPS, that sounds about right. I'll try and see if I can decipher the half decayed code on my COA sticker, haha. If I can't, will buying another copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and using the key from that work?

You'd possibly be better off buying the Recovery media from the manufacturer - that sontains the necessary certificates to be able to self-activate the Key you're currently using.
