I can! And the pop-up hasn't appeared screaming at me for having "Non-genuine Windows." Thank you guys so much. I really, really appreciate the help.

And in Computer>Properties, it now says Windows is activated. I really wonder how the System32 folder became read-only.

Run MBAM

When the installation is done uncheck Enable free trial of Malwarebytes (see image below )

Update the definitions and do a full scan

Results of the Malwarebytes scan. The only issue was a No-CD patch I downloaded a while back when I left my Oblivion disc at a friend's house.

Looks like the problem wasn't caused by malware, at least
It's possible that something just set a single file to read-only and that triggered the problem - it's very difficult to say what it may have been, or which file was the problem.
