Hi,

We make documents using Windows Office Word 2007 on our computer at work and I'm wondering if I can get a free copy of it to use on my personal computer at work running Windows 7 64 bit, and also my home computer running Windows XP I believe 32 bit. If it's possible to do, will the documents look the same? And if so, can anyone tell me exactly where we can download a copy of it? Or different versions of it if it would require different versions?

Thank you for any help!
David

Many people have had the need to read and edit Word doc's. But for most folks, Word from MS is just too darn expensive.

However there is a FREE program that will read and edit Word docs that have the .doc and .docx extension.

That program is "Open Office" and it's easy to find and download from the internet. I use my copy of it to edit an Excel spreadsheet that I use to keep my car records. It also loads faster, runs fast and does not bug you for updates. Did I mention, that it's 100% FREE, for as long as you want to use it.

Just a suggestion, to save you some money. ;)

There are no free versions of Microsoft Word. If you want MS Word you will have to buy it.

Follow TechnoMage's advice for a free program to open a Word document on your home computer. However, if you edit & work on the document with a non MS Word program & then take it back to office you will probably have to do some alterations to make it exactly the same as the original that you took home in the first instance.

Actually, there is a free version of Microsoft Word: Microsoft Office Online.

https://products.office.com/en-us/office-online/documents-spreadsheets-presentations-office-online

It is totally free to use. The only caveat is that it is entirely in the Microsoft "cloud". That doesn't bother me, if the content of the documents isn't sensitive. And you can easily copy documents from the cloud storage area to your computer's hard drive.

If you want the software to be installed on your computer rather than run from the "cloud", you could try Libre Office:

https://www.libreoffice.org/

That's what I use almost all the time. It is almost 100% compatible with Microsoft Office programs. Occasionally it isn't -- mainly with fonts.

I also recommend LibreOffice. It has almost completely replaced Office 2010 on my computer. There is a bit of a learning curve to it but I'm pretty much able to everything in it I used to do in Office 2010. It has an added ability to open most MS Office documents and to save documents directly to PDF or MS Office documents (it can even embed a LibreOffice document into the PDF while saving to PDF which makes editing the PDF from within LibreOffice possible with out resorting to a PDF editing program).

One tip when using LibreOffice: make LibreOffice templates from blank MS Office documents. That will reduce some of the incompatibility issue that can arise when moving documents between MS Office and LibreOffice formats .

LibreOffice also has a halfway decent User's Forum. The advice there is usually pretty good but the forum software totally sucks.

Btw, be advised that Office 2007 reached EOL (End Of Life) back on the 10th of this month and will no longer receive any security updates, making it increasingly vulnerable to malware infection. If your office is still using Office 2007, they need to switch to a newer version. Also, XP reached EOL on 04/08/2014 and also should be replaced with a newer OS. You may be infected and not even know it.

No...even you copy 2007 version from your laptop at work, you still can't access to it in your personal laptop or computer. Btw which version are you using on your personal laptop? it is possible to save the file in lower version of Word, but not higher version.
