Have setup Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 in VMWare Workstation 6.5.3 today, here is some info so far:

Install time - This is from start to finish (setting up the server along with four computers (destops), and three laptops,)) 53 minutes

Network: Nat

GUI - Windows 7 Classic mode (when running inside VM it will only come up in Classic mode.

Setting up of HDD and sharing folders

Thinking of running it as my OS until Win 7 hits the streets.

In the first picture you will see that it has been activated with 180 days; no key required, however, they do request you keep them up-to-date with any problems, or just let them know that everything is running smoothly.

You must have a TechNet account.

The second pictures shows the Network along with shared folders. :)

Running 2008 R2 on my main server and it's a nice improvement over 2008. And for those curious, you can install it from a flashdrive by following the same instructions as Win7 :D

You must have a TechNet account.

Technet must be free right? Because I downloaded this the other day and all I have is a Hotmail/Live account. Maybe I signed up for Technet and didn't even realize it.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.

TechNet is not free; it's a paid subscription service.

OK. Then unless something has changed, you don't need a Technet account to get Server 2008 R2 directly from Microsoft.

Umm...if you have a technet account you already have Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM - with keys.

I mean, it 's how I got both - by buying a technet account.

Server 2008 was based upon the Vista kernel / OS.

Server 2008 R2 is based upon the W7 kernel / OS.
