I recently was asked to update a friends Dell laptop and had the same problems installing SP1. I tried every tip I could find but to no avail. I then decided to take the ultimate step (and last hope) and SUCCESS!!!

1. Download the SP1 iso file from Microsoft Support and burn to a DVD
2. Do a format and clean install of Windows 7
3. DO NOT perform any updates at this point
4. Install SP1 from the DVD
5. Run Windows Update
At this point you might find that other updates now fail. If so:-

6. Run the Update Fix from MS Support
7. Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services / Windows Update and ensure it is switched on (for some strange reason it sometimes get switched off)
8. Run Windows Update - You might have to do this 3-4 times to get all updates to suceed
