G'day people!

Like many others here, I've experienced the situation where Windows Update point-blank refuses to update, and returns the generic 0x8007370B error code.

Microsoft's help relating to this code is woeful to say the least; thankfully a bit of "Google-fu" has led me here.

I've run (and re-run) the SURT and the various Windows Update FixIt and Hotfix tools from Microsoft, with no success.
I've even tried their method to reset the the Windows Update sub-system to no avail.

From following the diagnostic instructions posted in other threads, it has become apparent that I too have been the victim of bit-flip errors, as evidenced in the CheckSUR.log file included below.

From what I've discovered, this appears to be a fairly common occurrence, yet Microsoft doesn't appear to have a simple method to reset this component store or otherwise rebuild from scratch.

So, where do we go from here?

Registry corruption such as you have is almost impossible to legislate for :(

I need to have alook at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy theC:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop andthen compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site(preferably Dropbox or SkyDrive) and post a link.

Hi Noel,

Thanks for the prompt response.

I've never used file share services, so have no idea which are the good ones.
However, when compressed using 7-Zip or WinRAR, my components hive is less than the 8MB archive file attachment size limit, so I've attached it here.

(My preference is 7-Zip as it gives superior compression results, but as your site only accepts ZIP or RAR archives, I've installed WinRAR 5.0)

Cheers again,
Scott

OK - I've done a first attempt at cleaning up the corruption in the hive....

I've uploaded a file - esmcomp.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the file and select Extract All, andsave to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the followingcommands.

REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTSCOMPONENTS.OLD1

COPY %userprofile%\desktop\esmcomp\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE -do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run anotherCheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

OK - for ease of my reading and to check that there's nothing else that CheckSUR can currently do, please run it again, and post the new results.

Also, please upload the new COMPONENTS file afterwards, and I'll do another round of clean-ups.

Latest SURT run completed

Good morning Noel,

As requested, I re-ran the CheckSUR, and the the CheckSUR.log file is attached here.

Windows is still doing "something", as the components file and CBS.log file are still being updated.

When Windows has finished doing whatever it is doing with those files, I will upload a current CBS.zip and components.rar to you.

Updated CBS.zip and components.rar attached

hi Noel,

Well, some 3 hours after the CheckSUR/SURT completed, Windows finally finished the "something" it was doing to components and CBS.log.

As such, I've now been able to copy everything out and upload them as attachments here.

Looking forward to fresh discoveries.

Regards (and thanks again),
Scott

My, there's a lot of fun stuff going on in the CBS log! :)

I'll leave that for later, along with the Components hive - I have to go to work, and it may not be until tomorrow late that I get a chance to look at them.
Shout if you haven't heard by Wednesday!

I've uploaded a file - esmcomp2.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY %userprofile%\desktop\esmcomp\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE -do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run anotherCheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file

Situation improving with every update

Hi Noel,

I really appreciate your activities here.

I successfully downloaded and installed the updated components hive.

I executed the CheckSUR twice so as to get a final definitive log, as per previous runs.

Here's the latest log contents:

As you can see, the number of errors is definitely reducing.

Looking forward to the next iteration.

With any luck, the expired catalogues issue will disappear once Windows Update actually gets a chance to complete a run. From the (w) tags in the log file, I'm presuming that these are warnings, rather than fatal (f) errors.

Anyway, I'll start this round of component hive and CheckSUR updates and see what eventuates.

Cheers!

Hi Noel,

Thanks once again for your very able assistance.

This last round appears to have done the trick, as there are no more (f) tagged messages in the CheckSUR.log

I'll attempt to run a regular Windows Update now and see what happens.

(time passes)

Okay - this is most gratifying - Windows Updates has successfully listed how many updates are available/applicable to my system. This hasn't occurred for around 12 months or so.

I'll let it run, and then post back here the results, but at this point I'd say we're all fixed.

Regards,
Scott

I think we can close this as solved, now.

Hi Noel,

Great news - after processing 12 months of updates, everything is looking fine.

As a precaution, I re-ran the SURT/CheckSUR patch, and here are the results:

Many thanks for all your efforts.

I think we can safely close this one out and mark as solved. :D  :D
