The CBS log is a mess - which is to be expected with that number of problems.

I'll post a fix protocol later.

I've uploaded afile - unkaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

Please downloadand save it.

Right-click onthe downloaded file, and select Extract all…

Extract to thedefault location - which will create a new folder unkaain the same place.

Open this folder- there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to thefolder

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Andthe content of the manifestsfolder (.manifest files) into this folder:

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Nowrun the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Postthe new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Thank you very much Noel, for working on this. Sorry it took me awhile to respond as my wife has been gone on a trip and I've been having to be mom and dad for my 3 kids.

Here are the CheckSUR files.

No problem :)
The CheckSUR log now shows clear.

Please run another SFC /SCANNOW so we can make sure that nothing new is reported. If it comes back 'nothing found', then do a manual Check for Updates, and attempt installation of the oldest offered update and see how it goes.

Hi Noel. I have been trying to work on this, but my computer has been freezing up at the point where it says "Starting Windows". Sometimes I can get in using Safe Mode, but sometimes even then it has frozen up.

It may take awhile for me to get back to you.

Do you think it would be best for me to do a re-install?

It sounds like you may have a hardware problem?

Check your RAM using memtest86++ and see if that's the problem.

Hi Noel. I was having difficulty working on Safe Mode so I used System Restore. I then went back and redid what you suggested. Here are the CheckSUR logs again. I will now try the SFC / Scannow.

I'm not sure I understand how to use memtest86+. Could you refer me to a site that would explain it clearly step by step?

The CheckSUR is not clear - having fixed the problems, and the SFC also succeeded in fixing all the problems it found.

With any luck, Windows Updates will now work - do a manual Check for Updates first, and then install only the oldest update found, to check the system.

Noel, my computer has begun to freeze again. Actually, sometimes I can tell that behind the frozen "Starting Windows" screen, it is starting. I can hear the bell indicating when I need to enter the password. But since I'm stuck with the same screen, I can't try downloading updates. So then I tried doing it in Safe Mode, but apparently updates are disabled in Safe Mode. So it seems I need to fix what you think is a memory problem that is causing the screen to freeze. Can memtest+ work on Safe Mode? If so, please help me get detailed instructions on how use it. Appreciate the help.

Memtest creates its own boot disk, and runs completely outside Windows, so isn't affected by any Windows problems.
