What update is causing the problem?

Sometimes a direct download of the update will work instead of using the updater.

Usually it will have a KBxxxxx. With the KB number I can find a link to MS to directly download or you can.
Either way.

Something to read and make sure of on your end.
Windows Update error 80072efd

Will look for added info if the above is not a problem. :D

Similar to above but has Resolution section towards bottom of page to try different things.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Also has an Advanced Trouble shooting just below Resolution section. I'm not sure if or how much it may help.

usually info on Microsoft site ends up being useless or really hard to understand. as it is in this case.

at Windows Update error 80072efd

they tell you to add an exception but the instructions are wrong and there is no way to "add"

in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Firewall\Allowed Programs

and at

You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

they talk about a network issue which is a bit far fetched

im sure this is a bug or virus and nothing to do with connection

It was what I could find. I figured it was a waste but worth a look.
I did post this as a disclaimer! I'm not sure if or how much it may help. ;)

You may want to have the mods move the thread to Windows Updates section.
Niemiro is the resident expert on such things. He will definitely see it over there.

Click the red triangle in the corner of a post and say please move to Windows update. They will move it then.
Last I checked Niemiro wasn't on line but he should be popping in sometime.

May have messed with registry for Win Update.

Try a System Restore to a day or so before the fake AV running. It might just put things back in order.

Easy to try.
Mike

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
NOTE: Be sure to temporarily disable your antivirus program first to prevent it from possibly preventing you from doing a system restore.

Never noticed the note before.

Fake anti virus, you should do a full scan with malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes is a good idea. Download the free. Install then update it then run full scan to be sure.

Leave it on the computer for future use. It is on demand so you run it when you want or need to.
I run it every 7-14 days as a just in case.
Never found anything that Avast missed but..... you never know.

If clean then try a System Restore.

Then we leave it to Niemiro if Sys Restore doesn't fix it.

Hello!

Try System Restore first. After that, we can dig deeper. Network related issues are always difficult to solve, as they don't really have an exact set of solutions, but I will do my best. Our other thing to go on is malware. Please also run MBAM as described above, and post the log here.

Thanks!

Richard

You are infected :( Let's see if Eset can get to this malware....

  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the
    esetOnline.png
    button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on
      esetSmartInstall.png
to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the
      esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png
      icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
    esetAcceptTerms.png
  5. Click the
    esetStart.png
    button.

  10. When the scan completes, push
    esetListThreats.png
  11. Push
    esetExport.png
, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

In case it can't run, do this to restor MS's Hosts file....
Download the HostsXpert 4.3 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 4.3 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
  • Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 4.3 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Now try Eset again.
