Hi, i noticed that my fonts were displaying a little weirdly yesterday. I ended up doing a System Restore and my fonts came back to normal

In the System Restore dialog an update was listed MS14-045: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 27, 2014 - so im suspecting that this is the cause of my problems as it points to a known issue with fonts.

When i started my PC this morning the fonts problem was back - so I had to restore again! Im not sure how this update got back on the system??

What id like to know is how can i prevent this update from installing?

thanks

edit: ive just checked System Restore and that Critical Update has silently installed again :(

its good that you know which update is causing the problem,
first change the settings for Updates to not install Automatically,
now uninstall the problem update, reboot if required,
now check for updates manually (it will list the available updates but won't install them automatically)
the problem update should be visible now(check both important and optional)
right click on the problem update and choose the option 'Hide Update'
now this update will be ignored even if you choose the option for updates to install automatically.....

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

This is a known issue and Microsoft is still working to fix the issue.
Also look for these updates KB2965768, KB2970228, KB2973201, KB2975719.
Uninstall these updates and hide them so that windows will ignore these updates.(i believe you have set the update to not get installed Automatically).

MS fixed the problem update some time ago - and reissued it under a new KB number to allow people to fix the problems from the first issue.
So far as I am aware, there have been no significant problems with the new version.
