Windows Update Not Downloading

Here's the problem. Windows Update was telling me it was downloading an update but it just stayed at 0%. When shutting down I get the message Windows is configuring Updates etc. but nothing happens so I have to turn the power off. I tried restoring to an earlier point but it keeps happening, even with Automatic Updates turned off. Which leads me to believe there's some temporary files or something at work here.

Currently I have disabled the Update service & everything is fine. What I want to know is which files I can delete which will hopefully solve my problem?

Thanks in advance :)

Thanks for your help. I have tried doing all 4 suggestions but with no success.

Running Windows Update now does not achieve anything-it is just constantly checking for updates. All history of previous updates has gone. & when running the system update readiness tool, that's stuck on "Searching for updates on this computer".

Any ideas as to what I can do now?

Actually I spoke prematurely. The Update Readiness tool found a Hotfix for Windows after some time but then this failed to install.

& now it seems updates are showing. Will see if they install now...

Well after 4 hours downloading 5 updates with a total of 30MB size (not my usual speed lol) & a long installation time, 4 installed and 1 failed. I then restarted and after ages spent at 15% configuring updates it finally restarted.

My update downloading and installing never used to take this long and it all worked ok. Is there any particular reason why this should happen?

Maybe any security software cause this,or you use any proxy server? If you use any proxy server then restore oryginal internet settings. You can also try uninstall all 3p security software.

A little late to the party, but my Windows Update for Windows 7 was having the same issues.

Always at 0%, the size of the downloads was only 50MB, and it just didn't download, even though I have very fast broadband. Eventually it would say my downloads had been cancelled.

Then, I tried logging in as administrator (I normally use a non-administrator account), and then it started working again. Download speed was still slow, but it was getting past the 0%, downloading the updates, and installing them normally.

Once logged in as an Administrator, there's an option to allow all users to install updates - use that :)
