Windows update not working

Hi all,

Just installed fresh copy of win 7 64bit SP1, i have activated it and confirmed it is genuine copy. I then went to get the normal updates and noticed that it had a red x in the shield, so i clicked update and it said looking for updates, i left it running while i went out for a couple of hours, when i came back it was still checking and no updates?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Torchwood,

Reason for re-installing was because i open an email by mistake and got infected, which i thought i had sorted out but it was still behaving strangely.

Run malwarebytes free, CHECK the rootkit option in dashboard settings and then ESET, dissable any other Antivirus.

Chaos, windows updates are not working well for a lot of people on Windows 7 right now.

Try this:

Go into Windows update and set it to "never check for updates".

Open services.msc from the start menu search.

Scroll down to Windows update service, stop it and set the service to manual.

Reboot the PC.

Install the latest Windows update client https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3138612

Again reboot the PC.

Open services.msc and set Windows update service back to "Automatic (Delayed Start)" and start the service.

Open Windows update in control panel and set it to your preferred setting (I use check for updates but don't download).

Run Windows update and let it run, it should pick them up quickly but may take up to an hour.
