Hello,

I am trying to install Windows 7, 32-bit Service Pack 1 on my father's laptop. I have ran SURT as well as did a SFC scan. The scan came out clean but according to the CHECKSUR.log, I am missing many files. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

We need the results of a new SFC - whatever they were before, they are no longer valid.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your desktop, zip the copy, and upload the zip file to your reply.

Thank you, Noel, for the quick reply! I've attached the CBS file to the post.

SFC is reporting none of the file problems that CheckSUR found - and the indications are that CheckSUR managed to do all the repairs itself.

Please run CheckSUR again - if it comes back with errors present, post the new log.
Otherwise, what happens if you attempt a new Check for Updates, and attempt to install only the oldest found update?

So I ran the program again and it seems the same problems occur, just the fixed problems have been removed:

The two updates that I'm having a problem with is the service pack 1 and the Intel Management Engine Interface. I tried to install them separately as you suggested and now it seems I got a new error. The 80073712 error from the service pack is gone and replaced with 800F0829.

I hope this information is sufficient.

Edit: I don't know if this helps but we got this laptop pre-owned with the OS already installed so we never actually reformatted the laptop when we got it. The previous owner never gave us their CD.

The Intel IME is totally unnecessary - unless you want the ability to remotely manage the computer. I'd simply uninstall it completely anyhow.

I'll post a fix protocol for the missing files later.

... having problems sourcing a few variants in there :(

Let's go with what I already have, and see what's left.

I've uploaded a file - vtcaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\vtcaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\vtcaa
or
DIR E:\vtcaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\vtcaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Thanks, I appreciate it. When I tried to use your instructions, I couldn't access the "repair my computer" prompt without a CD (which I don't have since I bought this computer pre-used) so I just went into the command prompt through Windows. Once I tried to copy the files, the prompt said:

"Does c:\windows\winsxs\y\i\s\v\h specify a file name or directory name on the target <F = file, D = directory>?"

I tried F and D and it responded as an invalid path. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi, so I created a repair disc using the link you gave me (thanks for that!) and I followed your steps. I got a similar message back when I tried to repair the computer through the disc ("Does c:\windows\winsxs\y\i\s\v\h specify a file name or directory name on the target <F = file, D = directory>?") instead of stating it was an invalid path, it just said 0 files copied.

I'm not certain that I was able to copy the files in but maybe the CBS log will clear things up. Thanks.

the SFC scan is clear - but I think that's beacause SFC didn't detect the errors in the first place.

From what you've written, it looks as if you omitted the spaces before the switches in the command..
You wrote
c:\windows\winsxs\y\i\s\v\h

The proper command is
XCOPY D:\vtcaa D:\windows\winsxs(space)/y(space)/i(space)/s(space)/v(space)/h

I apologize for that! I did it the first time but since I kept getting errors, I changed the prompt.

10 files were successfully copied. I am attaching the CBS and also the CheckSUR log (in case you need it).

Good - SFC is happy, and the CheckSUR result is less confusing ;)

One more try - if this fails then we'll have to look in the registry for problems.

XCOPY <drive>:\vtcab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

Hi! The service pack installed successfully, along with a slew of other updates. The only one left is now the Intel interface. You mentioned before that it wasn't necessary but it's still listed as an important update. Any way to get it to stop alerting me to install it?

Attached is the new CBS.log. Fingers crossed that I'm clean!

Great!
If you right-click on the update in the listing, you can select 'Hide update' - this will prevent it bothering you until it is itself updated again.

The SFC scan is clear, so you should be good to go.
