Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64-bit
Ran System Update Readiness Tool and SFC /scannow (no problems found in SFC, but it ran so fast I wonder if it ran correctly). Also I ran SFC several times, rebooted, and ran it several more times.

Here are the updates I tried to run and the error codes:
KB2862330 (Code 80073712)
KB2984972 (Code 80073712)
KB2894844 (Code 80073712)
Internet Explorer 11 (Code 9C57)

I tried to upload the CBS.zip file, but got "500 - Internal Server Error." The zip file is 9.5MB, and the table says a max of 8MB is allowed. Is it possible to shrink it more?

Thanks for any help!

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Please disregard this entry. I didn't scroll down far enough on the page.

I am sorry to seem (be?) ignorant, but when I try to find the 64-bit SP1 latest version at the linked page:

Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River

I come to a table that appears to offer three languages: Chinese, Danish, and Dutch. Also there is nothing in the column for SP1 U for Home Premium. Your help for this rather old codger is much appreciated!

I did the Repair Install. Mostly it looks like things are good. Windows Update shows that I am current on all important updates.

However, there are a couple of things not working right. First of all, my Avast antivirus will not run ("side-by-side configuration is incorrect"). I cannot download Avast from download.cnet.com. I click on the link (in Firefox) and nothing happens.

Adobe Photoshop will not run ("0xc01500002"), nor will Photoshop Elements ("side-by-side configuration is incorrect").

Also, I cannot locate Internet Explorer.

What do you think about these problems? Thanks!

side-by-side configuration errors are usually the result of problems with Visual C++ installs.
Please run SFC and CheckSUR, and post the new CBS data - it should give us enough data to know what to look for.

Unable to locate Internet Explorer? - that's a new one! what happens if you click on the Start button and enter iexplore.exe in the Search box and hit the Enter key?

SFC reported no integrity problems. Here is the link to the CBS logs at Dropbox:

Regarding Internet Explorer, this is a strange one. The Windows Start button does not have the Search box under the All Programs button. In Windows Explorer, I am used to having a search box in the upper right side of the window, but it is not there either. Just browsing around manually, I did not find iexplore.exe. I did find the Run command, and typed iexplore.exe, but it was not found on the computer.

I have solved a couple of the problems. For whatever reason, the Repair defaulted to Windows Features for Search and Internet Explorer both in the OFF configuration. They have both been enabled now (but with IE8). Currently updating to IE11.
I fixed the Avast problem by installing the latest version.
That leaves me with the two Adobe issues (Photoshop and Elements). Any idea what to try there? (See previous post for CBS info.)
Thanks!

As I said earlier, these relate to Visual C++ installs - look for the entries in the Programs listing, and see if you're offered the option to repair the install of Visual C++. If not, you can try uninstalling it and reinstalling the same version from a fresh download.
