My problem is identical to kpk13's posted 1 week ago, but the solution that worked for him doesn't work for me. I'm trying to run Windows update on a Windows 7 laptop I haven't used in a while, and get the message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running." However, both "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" and "Windows Update" services are running, as detailed in "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates" error message when you try to install updates". The app in .../971058 claims to have fixed the problem but I still have it. Any suggestions?

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Thanks for the response. In the meantime, I tried a second time the method of stopping wuauserv, renaming the SoftwareDistribution directory, and restarting the service. The last time it didn't work (Update reported the same error). This time it did. Don't know why.

please post the logs anyhow - they may help identify the cause and /or further problems.
