Windows Update stuck at checking for updates

I have installed Windows 7 starter on my netbook. Now it's time to update

WU first said it had to update a component and seems it did correctly.

After each boot, WU says "Check for updates for this computer" (I have it set to check but not download them)
Windows Update is stuck at checking for updates, and while that, CPU usage remains at 50% with occasional spikes at 100% by svchost.

No error codes, SFC scannow returns OK, no log files, and no error codes as per the "Windows Update Posting Instructions" thread.
I have defragged, cleaned registry, reset Windows update as per the "Windows Update - Reset" thread, and waited for hours and hours.

I searched and can't get a clue some say to simply wait but I've waited too much.
What else can I do?

Hi,
Well you can always close the update window and shut down or restart and see if that shakes it up
Resetting windows updates also removes any wifi or lan drivers that are loaded that I know of pretty much resets everything which there are hundreds of updates to display

You might check but reset also reset updates settings to default which is to download and install so you might double check that if you haven't already.

I've always gotten in a habit to use wired internet connections when checking for or loading updates.

I have rebooted a lot (mainly because I can't keep the netbook running for a long time like 4 hours and never goes beyond the checking for updates message)
Yeah I have it set to check updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.
I connect it via WiFi, because I can't get a cable for it (as it's used for my desktop)

PD: I have rebooted again because I had to go and now says "Please do not power off or unplug your machine Installing update 1 of 183", does that mean that it downlaoded them while the "checking for updates" message?

Thank you. I don't know why it didn't show the progress for downloading updates as it always did.

When you reset windows updates I'm sure is the reason the settings also changed to default.

10 hours "checking for updates" until I rebooted.
3 hours to install 183 updates
Reboot only to get "failure configuring Windows update reverting changes"

And every update FAILED, most with 800705B4 and some with 8007000E

Tomorrow I will probably reinstall the OS if WU doesn't show the downloading progress.

Yep these links were the first thing I read after seeing those errors but didn't help me (no memory issues as none apps other than WU were running and the troubleshooter didn't detect anything). I will retry and if still fails then a os reinstall

You might just shut down or restart might shake things up.
