Windows Update

I run Windows 7 and haven't had any updates since October 2015. Is this right? Or should I have gotten more updates after that date?

There have been updates since then.

What happens when you manually check for updates?

If you seen the Windows Update (WU) screen checking for updates for hours, then set the computer to not sleep and leave it on (and searching) for a day or two. The WU screen should eventually show you a list of updates to install.

You should have MSE updates everyday, I hope you have that installed.

But seriously, in 6 months you should`ve had dozens of updates.

Make sure your update settings are like this.

ya I wish it was like that all the time. I had a couple of the things ticked that don't show in your screenshot. I do not want the Windows 10 to install so now what do I look for so it won't. I have alot of stuff and don't want to lose it just yet till I have time to do a backup of all my files.

What do you have selected in the Important updates drop down list ?
Do you have "Never check for updates ..." selected ?

Do you periodically manually check if updates are available (especially after Patch Tuesday updates are published)?
Many people have reported the Notification Area icon showing updates are available hasn't been working correctly.

no I haven't been checking then wondered about it when I made my first post. so that is why I asked if there were any update since last Oct. now I see there is, but like I said I don't want the windows 10 to install so what do I look for so I don't install windows 10 before I allow the updates to install.

I don't know of a fix for the "missing" updates available Notification Area icon, so you have to manually check if updates are available.
PT updates are available after 10:00 AM PST, so at a minimum check after that every 2nd Tuesday of the month.

There are so many threads about what updates to install and not install for the W10 upgrade.
Someone else might know the right/best answer.

EDIT:
I'm on Win 8.1 right now and see i have 23 new updates published on 2016-03-15
That's the 3rd Tuesday of the month, so they aren't PT updates

At the very least I would avoid KB3035583. There are other updates that are related to W10, as mentioned in David's reference in another thread, but the KB3035583 is the main culprit that causes a lot of headaches for users that don't want to upgrade to W10.

So far, I only have two KB's that are not installed: KB3035583 and KB2952664. However, I'm not sure if KB2952664 plays that big a part in W10 as KB3035583.

You would have to periodically check what others have to say about updates, issues, etc.

What you really should do is keep periodic System Backup Images using a program such as Macrium Reflect (free).
Then you could restore the image before the "problem started", including W10 upgrade, bad updates, malware, HD crash, etc.
I'm not worried about a forced W10 upgrade, i can easily back it out with a Image restore.
